I had the free demo of WinZip  that has just expired. I really liked it , but am wondering if there's a free one out there that is just as good or should I just go out and purchase WinZip ?

Agreed. With WinRAR you can open zip files and .7Z files also

You can (if you have the winzip installer) add/remove winzip and reinstall. After 30 days it pesters you.

I install 7-Zip first thing on every computer. I like open source. But there are other good solutions, like WinRAR and others.
