September 17, 201312 yr I have a couple of 120GB SSDs on my PC, as well as two 1TB SATA drives. The first SSD is split into two partitions: the first is my C drive with Windows 7 x64, the second has FSX on it. At first sight not perhaps the best idea I ever had, but the PC is only used for FSX and FS9 (the latter - a much larger installation than FSX with all the addons I have accumulated over the years). I am now getting a bit short of space on my C drive (the old story!!) and want to move some FSX folders off the SSD onto one of the SATA drives. I have already done this with a number of very large folders like NL2000 (50GBs). I then link them to FSX via a dynamic link (symlink/junction), which seems to work just fine performance-wise. Has anyone done this though with any of FSX's native folders? I am wondering which might be the best candidate? Maybe the Addon scenery folder? Thanks. Martin Stebbing, EGLF (UK)
September 17, 201312 yr It can be done with the addon scenery folder, but I wouldn't do it. You risk messing up some installations and your scenety library will be in a mess. Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
September 17, 201312 yr Author How come?? You can simply point to the right folder in scenery.cfg. Why a mess? I've done it with no problem in FS9 ... Martin Stebbing, EGLF (UK)
September 17, 201312 yr I moved all my ORBX scenery to an SSD from my main FSX HDD using a junction link. Works just fine. Take a look at a small utility called Junction Link Magic. Joe Brown
September 17, 201312 yr Author Thanks - I create junction links via a cmd script. Works just fine. Was just wondering which folders to link in FSX in order to clear space. I think my 3rd. party scenery, Aerosoft Antarctica and so forth, is the most likely candidate. Will clear 50GBs.. Martin Stebbing, EGLF (UK)
September 17, 201312 yr If you have no problem doing the manual updates in the scenery library you'll most likely be fine. Just remeber that uninstalling and configurating some addons might be problematic if they need to find files in their original locations. Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
September 17, 201312 yr Author Thanks for the input. I've done this 1000 times in FS9 (I never use the FS9/FSX interface to manipulate scenery - always the cfg file), so I am fine with how to do it. Just need to choose the folders that will have the least impact on performance. Martin Stebbing, EGLF (UK)
September 18, 201312 yr Not sure if this would help, bit several weeks ago I moved FSX to a new drive- basic copy/paste to the new drive, then assigned the new drive the same drive letter as the old drive was (after renaming the old FSX drive, of course). Everything seemes to work OK, including previously installed PMDG aircraft and other payware. All of this can be done in the OS. Thanks, Bruce. ASEL, Instrument. KBJC, Colorado.
September 18, 201312 yr Author Thanks Bruce. Yes, that should work if the paths to the files is the same in the registry. I have expanded my C drive now using Partition Wizard, making space by moving more large folders off the FSX partition (on the SSD) and creating a dynamic link to them. Seems to work OK, though whether there is any drop at all in fps I haven't yet tested. I'd be surprised if it made any difference. I am sure any small disadvantages are going to be outweighed by the advantage of having a c drive which is no longer over-full. Will post back if I see any performance issues from this, but I don't see why there should be, as I say. M. Martin Stebbing, EGLF (UK)
