October 7, 201312 yr Hi Guys! Yesterday i was flewing from VTSM to VTCC it is around 580 nm and the fue estimated was aroud 3500 pounds. I had a TOW of 22000 pounds. With this weight and the lenght of flight of Approx 2.5 hours what shoulkd be the optimum flight level? Is there some charts where in base of the weight i can calculate the OPT FL? Thanks Alfredo Russo
October 8, 201312 yr Its a turbo prop, not a jet. Optimal flight level is affected far more by prevailing winds then altitude. Paul Smith.
October 9, 201312 yr Hi Paul, is that because a turbo prop's fuel consumption is affected by altitude much less than a jet engine? Hans Soule
October 9, 201312 yr It's because you're going a lot slower, so wind has a bigger impact. And also, most turboprops don't go anywhere near the altitudes most jets do. In reality, there are lookup tables for optimum alttudes, but typically you'll find the Jetstream is happiest in the high teens to low twenties, FL180-FL220. I know this is quite a bit lower than service ceiling, but the 41 is not blessed with an excess of power with which to reach it  ckyliu, proud supporter of ViaIntercity.com. i5 12400F, 32GB, RTX4070, more in "About me" on my profile.
