Cannon effect for RealAir Simulations' Spitfire

Featured Replies

For those of you who (like me) "missed" a visible/audible cannon on that otherwise fabulous and outstanding Spitfire from RealAir:Download and install my (freeware) package "rcbsc-12.zip" from the library.Enjoy,, Rob Barendregt

Rob,What does this do? Does it simulate Cannon firing...like firing an imaginary cannon but with sounds?Just a random and perhaps idiotic thought, is it possible to introduce some armamenent on the Spitfire and generally shoot and destroy on FS 9 ? He!he!-Pranav

Rob i got your cannons, great thanks, do you know of any way of adding the 4 machine guns aswell, i tried adding the ones from the Lago tornado and the Capt sim Yak but all with no luck?cheers :)

Hi Bruce,Forgive my lack of weaponary knowledge, but to me a cannon and a machine gun are the same thing :-). So maybe I should have called them machineguns...And since I only saw two gun barrels on the visual model, I assumed a spitfire only has two.I can't tell why other effects won't work; the effect is just switched on/off by lightswitch 10.Note just one thing: the highest number for light.** is 18.FS only supports 19 LIGHT entries (00 - 18).Cheers, ROb

cheers Rob the number of lights explains things. that will make things a bit easier to understand. and explains why i could only get 3 guns to work :) if i disable the VC nav lights that will give me enough lights for a full complement of guns.a machine gun of which the first spitfires had 8 of .303 inch caliber fires "lumps" of lead like a hand gun, which rely on hitting something important when fired at another aircraft, a cannon fires an explosive shell that explodes on impact, so is much more effective when fired from a plane.the guns that have visible barrels are the cannons (possibly for cooling and because the cannons have longer barrels than the smaller machine guns), the machine guns are inside the wings inboard of the cannons.

Rob thanks for your help i have managed to fully arm my "Spit", i kept your panel gauge (as to be honest i do not know how to get the guns to work without it), but i used the machine guns and cannons form the Capt Sim Yak 3 (they don't have shell cases but they do have puffs of smoke and the tracer is better matched between the machine gun and connon). To get the extra 4 guns to fit in i had to remove 3 lights (thanks for that tip Rob), so i removed the VC nav lights and the whit nav light. I still have them on the racer but IMHO guns are better for a fighter plane than nav lights :)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/99854.jpg

Next thing folks will be stripping out the fuselage so they can fit torpedoes underneath!Seriously,(Rob Barendregt) thanks very much for the cannon addon, all the better that it doesn't actually cause death or injury to anyone, but it is rather fun to get one's aim right.Looks like many happy Spitfire pilots are taking up your free gift which is a very clever addon. I hope they roll up here and show their appreciation for you a bit more than they have.Kind Regards,Rob Young

Hey RobFunny and clever little thing you have created here. It sure make`s it a little bit more fun to "cruise" around in your warbirds.Best part is, that it work`s with all the other planes of war, but it`s gone be some work to get it added to them all.Thank`s a lot for this little gemJanson

Hi Rob B,Nice effect! I haven't tried it myself yet but it certainly looks the part, especially in the picture above! well done!CheersTimhttp://members.chello.nl/t.westnutt/realair1.gif

I still used Rob's files just that i substituded the Yak 3 Cannons and added its machine guns (i removed the nav lights from the spit to get them in though)

Hi Tim and Rob (Young),Thanks for the compliments .. I really liked composing the package. To Tim: it's a shame you have't tried it yet..You should :-)To Rob: don't blame me if people are "rebuilding" your wonderfull Spitfire to look like a cold-war jet or WW2 bomber ...:-) :-)Cheers,Rob

not sure if anyone else has noticed this but the in cockpit flashes from the cannon barrels only show up when the aircraft is on the ground, the tracers show all the time as do the flashes in the exterior views. Is it just me or does anyone else have this prob or know how to fix it?Cheers

Hi Bruce,Yes, I notice that too...I guess this is just another one of those flaws in the FS effects engine I mentioned in my Readme (like one or both effects dropping out after a few seconds, or not showing at all, at lower frame rates). The funny thing is that if you place the effect more forward, like:light.17= 10, 11.5, -7.3, -1.9, SpitfireCannonthat problem is gone. Moreover, it IS NOT related to the Spitfire.I have tried the effect in other aircraft, and there I have simular problems (depending on the effect location). In one aircraft I can't even see the dropping shells in ANY view.I'll ask the designer (JR) of the effect if he can think of a reason, but I'll doubt there is a solution. So you'll just have to live with it :-)Anyway, it's not a problem of your PC/FS installation.Cheers, Rob

>To Tim: it's a shame you have't tried it yet..You should :-)Hi Rob,I havent tried it yet because I'm out of the country for a few days and also waiting for a new computer system to arrive bacause all the Spitfire testing blew up my system (didn't need any guns!)I should be up and running with a new super-dooper new computer system when Dell have built it and delivered it in about 10 days or so. I'll definitely try it then.CheersTim http://members.chello.nl/t.westnutt/realair1.gif
