Is it even possible to tweak my computer?

Featured Replies

I've been trying to tweak my computer to get decent results. I have miserable frame rates. At addon airports like kiad I will have frame rates of around 6-12 and that is without traffic added in! When I get up to cruise I will get frame rates of mid to high 20s. This was with pmdg 777. Inside the cockpit my frame rates were 7-10. My computer specs are as follows and I wonder if tweaks will even be able to fix my problems. I notice shimmering edges around the back of my plane engines or along the wing, I also notice the same type of shimmer in pay airports along some the runway lines. I am running windows 7 64 bit. I have a i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67 ghz (although I think it is OC to around 3.3). I have a quad core. I believe hyper threading is active.  I have 6gb of ram and an AMD radeon HD 5800 video card. I currently run fsx in d9. I followed the fsx genius video and made all the recommended tweaks to the config but it seemed to make things worse. I think those tweaks may work better with a newer video card. I am currently limiting frame rate to 30 inside fsx since when I try the external frame rate limiter even though I tell it 30 it says unlimited once I get into fsx. With these computer specs is it even possible to tweak fsx to the point where I will not get shimmering or abysmal frame rates? Should I be using d10? Am I expecting too much from my system? I like to fly to pay airports and would love to purchase some orbx products (I have the gobal ftx), but do not see the point if my computer will not display them in an adequate way. I can post my current config if that would help as well.

Thanks

Tweaks work for some but they do not work for everyone.  There are a lot of factors involved.  I have a very high powered system so I don't tweak at all (except I set my LOD_Radius from 4.5 to 6.5 and my Texture_Max_Load from 1024 to 2048).  Tweaks, if improperly employed, will do more harm than good.  There are several tweaking guides out there (and you didn't mention any one of the one's I am recommending).  First, there's the AVSIM Software and Hardware Guide (link us under the Forums tab above).  I like the two following guides from NickN - http://www.simforums.com/forums/drivers-nv-inspector-fsxcfg-complete-guide_topic36586.html and http://www.simforums.com/forums/the-fsx-computer-system-the-bible-by-nickn_topic46211.html.  The latter is very comprehensive.  There's another one called the Venetubo configurator that will automatically look at your system and configure your fsx.cfg.  That one has never worked for me but some say it has made their experience in FSX the best ever.  I hate to provide the link but here it is - http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html.  Just remember if none of the tweaks work and you are getting worse performance, you can fix that by deleting the fsx.cfg, restarting fsx, and letting the fsx.cfg rebuild.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Jim

Have you simply tried adjusting your settings, like turning down autogen?

Curious about the results, 'cause I have basically about the same specs as you and I'm about to reinstall FSX after a long retreat to FS9. When I used to use FSX it was just out in ORBX land, not in airliners and big airports so my frames were okay, and I didn't have to turn a lot of stuff down.
