Nvida GPU Boost - Are you really boosting? My observations

Featured Replies

So just this last couple of days I've been tinkering with overclocking my GTX 780's using EVGA precision X to squeeze some extra performance out of them.

So far as FSX my overclocking results on the cards (not running in SLI for FSX) yielded an average performance improvement of about 2FPS.

What I noticed during the course of my testing though was that the GPU would run at it's full boost clock as long as FPS were set to unlimited and there was no 1/2 refresh rate/fps limits set in Nvidia Inspector. Monitoring was done using GPU-Z.

However, as soon either 1/2 refresh rate was set or an FPS limit (internal or nvidia inspector) the GPU would fail to run at its boost clock. this was regardless of if the card was at it's overclocked or stock settings.

There is however a setting in EVGA Precision X  that will force the card to run at it's full boost clock, allowing you to get maximum performance out of your card for FSX or other games/apps that don't seem to boost.

I just thought I'd throw this out there and see if anyone else had noticed their cards not boosting in FSX and as a bit of a heads up that this may help give a little extra performance out of your card.

Cheers!  :good:

can you share the setting for permanent boost?

It's called K-Boost and it's in the same area where you can increase voltage.

Found it, but it doesn't make any difference. Thx!

Mine it's boosting to 1150 in FSX and in other games to 1250.

Are you running unlimited FPS, 1/2 vsync tweak etc as I mentioned in my first post?

Could I'd be because the lower framerate doesn't need the GPU to boost? That there's more than needed GPU grunt there at base clock anyway.

What happens if you crank up the AA settings in inspector to something insane?

That's a good point, I didn't try increasing AA levels above what they already are, however I didn't have "Usepools=0" set in my FSX config and did try using that to put more load on the GPU but there was still no use of boost clock.

Apparently there are other games out there which also have this same problem. I was reading a thread elsewehere and someone mentioned "League of Legends" (which I've never played) experiencing the same thing.

I think I read in another thread you also have a GTX 780? Would you mind testing out to see if your GPU is using it's boost clock under the scenarios I mentioned?

I'll have a look at it once I've finished putting the new floor down in the living room. As the sofa, tv, well everything from there is piled up in the kitchen diner I get very angry looks from my dear wife as soon as I try to sneak in a bit of computer time in my mancave now=)

LOL!

I know that look all to well! Better get that floor laid first. haha

I've tried other games, including BF4 and BF3, the GPU is boosting, but no more than 1150Mhz, if I try benchmark programs it will increase to it's full potential!

I'm thinking that we have great GPU's and games can't reach their limit!

Mine boosts just fine in other games and benchmarks too, it was just FSX.

What were your settings for FSX though? were FPS locked/unlocked? 1/2 vsync tweak on/off? etc. Like I said in my original post, mine would boost in FSX but only if FPS were unlimted and no vsync tweak.

Ahhh, Gentlemen! Sorry to jump in.

Isn't it an old wisdom that FSX is mainly CPU limited? My understanding is that you can hardly bring a GTX 580 to its limits in FSX. So I am not surprised that a GTX 780 does not give you any substantial improvement on fps (over e.g. a GTX 580) and is not forced to use its turbo.

But I hope that this will change shortly in P3D 2.0.

BTW: Do you use X-Plane? Have you tested your GTX780 with X-Plane10?

On the contrary, a stronger video card will yield good performance benefits in certain situations such as running higher resolutions and will also result in less FPS drop when running higher AA levels or in heavy weather.

I agree though that hopefully P3D 2.0 will make better use of GPU's, particularly in multi-GPU setups.

No I haven't used X-Plane. Some of the videos/shots I've seen do look impressive but I don't really like the idea of the "believable" world they have, but I might take a look some time.

Correction! Mine is boosting also to full power, I've played BF4 and indeed the GPU got  unleashed, I have forget to unlock to 1225Mhz, that's why it was running just 1150mhz!

Yes, I'm using FPS locked at 30 and 1/2 vsync in FSX

Thanks for clarifying. Perhaps my 780 isn't boosting in FSX like yours does because the 780 is a stronger GPU. Guess I'll wait and see what SAAB340 finds when he tests his out.

Cheers!
