AMD vs Intel, which one....

Featured Replies

...should I choose?

I'm about to upgrade my pc with new mobo/ram/cpu, but I'm in a bind here trying to decide which one to get. The AMD FX 8350 is looking good, for $199 I get 8mb L2/L3 cache, 8 cores and probably con be o/c to 4.5mhz

On the other hand, Intel has been the king of speed for a while now but at a price too, I'm looking at the Ivy's I7's but just the difference in price will almost pay for the mobo.

So, if anyone is running a FX8350  and wouldn't' mind sharing some performance info, it would be greatly appreciated.

If ram wasn't so expensive like it is today, I would have gone with the I7, but since I'm planning on 16g of ram, I may have to choose AMD.

By the way Im with Xplane 10 all the way, so any inpuy from an Xplane 10 user will be beneficial to my decision as I'm planning on keeping XP10 on my hard drive until XP11 comes out.

Geeeeez, not even one response, come on guys, I'm part of this community too you know...lol...If the lack of response is because you think I'm upgrading due to the fact that a new ver. of the "other sim" will be out soon, then you are totally wrong, I'm with XP all the way, always have been.

Oh well I guess everyone in this community is intel.

Well, here's my two cents worth.

I used AMD for years and it was principally because of the cost.  I had also heard it said that AMD was generally slower, but it was compared to using a bucket to dip information as opposed to the intel which was faster, but took smaller dips (compared to a tea cup).  Whether this is true or not, I do not know.

I do know that the last two processors I have used have been intel and I have been amazed at the difference in performance.

I have also found that (in X-Plane anyway), the upgrading of the video card is not of much value without upgrading the processor as well.  My latest build is an i7-4770, 16GB DDR3 DRAM, and an older GTX 560 OC video card.  In dusk settings, (no HDR) I can turn 75-80 (sometimes better) FPS.

Good luck on whatever decision you make.

How are you FPS when approaching large cities/airports like KORD?

This is my only gripe with my current pc specs, once I start getting close large cities/airports my fps dip into the 20's and this is with medium/low settings. I think that the culprit is the cpu in my case.

I would like to be able to maintain a minimum of 30 with medium to high eye-candy (no HDR). I may have to thing twice before sticking with AMD and take the plunge and go i7.

Anyway, thanks John for sharing your thoughts.

I fly local airports with a pretty good amount of add on scenery and the rates might drop into the 50s, but not bad!

I use the FX8350 with X-Plane 10 and I have a good 25-30 FPS in the sim with a good aircraft add-on and scenery. Here my settings: 1385173411.png

It's the VRAM usage from the extreme resolution texture settings that usually get ya'

I would be interested to see what you get with one setting lower......

As far as the OP, I have tried both Amd & Intel and Intel is usually superior. However, you pay a lot for that superiority, and with the way xplane uses cores, you might find the more the better. Its probably going to be pretty subjective.

Looking around, I also saw an early black Friday deal. Just a bit more expensive, but also faster: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8324285
