Why does my speedo suddenly jump back to zero?

Featured Replies

On several occasions my speedometer has jumped back to zero. And when I hit the up arrow plus Z all the information abour height, frame rate etc works normally exept the speed which shows zero. It's just happened again while flying the Cessna C172SP Skyhawk. Is this a problem that can be overcome?Cliff

"Is this a problem that can be overcome?"Are you turning on the pitot heat?Greg

Greg you've probably hit the nail on the head and I've learned something from you.I had downloaded real weather; it was snowing as I flew between the mountains. And the answer is "No". I didn't turn on the pitot heat. Thanks pal!Regards,Cliff

Was about to tell you the EXACT same thing. Pitot heat becomes essential in the winter time. :)

I use pitot heat all the time, no matter what. I don't have Active Sky, yet, but have had planes go back to 0 KIAS, even with pitot heat on! Does Active Sky eliminate this problem, or do you even know?

I have had this problem as well, with pitot heat on. Happened yesterday while decending into Anchorage in snow, with real world weather. Speed dropped to zero for about 15 seconds then back to normal. I think CTRL-H is the shortcut for Pitot heat and you can try this when you find the speed drops off. I have FSUIPC set such that it does NOT provide random icing.Mark.

Good idea Mark. I'll do the sameCliff

ALWAYS turn on pitot heat before departure. AFAIK, it's standard procedure for most AC? (It is at my PC, anyway LOL).

Victor Buck

Turning Pitot on as you line-up is standard procedure for all aircraft with pitot heaters. Must be switched off when taxying to prevent overheat. There are a few strange manifestations of the FS pitot freezing condition:1) When straight and level in a constant baro pressure, the ASI should freeze in the position that the pitot froze over in, as the air in the pitot line is locked in, it will maintain its pressure. If you climb or descend, then the pitot will kind of act like an altimiter (goes up as you you climb and visa-versa), because of static pressure changes.2) The machmeter should also behave in a similar way. You may have noticed that the machmeter continues to function normally when the ASI is zero!3) It should only freeze in cloud, rain or mist. You don't get icing without being in visible moisture.Well you do get icing when no visible moisture is present, but it is extremely unlikely to result in the pitot freezing over. In such a case the aircraft is said to be "cold soaked" and so light airframe icing can result, especially around the fuel tanks. This can happen when descending quickly from a high altitude. The airframe remains so cold that 'warm' low-alt air condenses and then freezes around it!
