Tweaking cfg for mid-PC - help needed

Featured Replies

Hi

First of all my rig:

1. Core i5 3570k OC'd to 4,6 GHz

2. 2x4 GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 RAM

3. Samsung Spin Point F1 HDD 500 GB

4. GTX 660Ti MSI PE OC @1280/7000 MHz

List of currently used addons:

1. REX 4 Direct

2. Active Sky Next

3. PMDG 737 NGX + 600/700 pack

4. Accufeel V2

5. FS Global 2010

6. FTX Global

7. FTX Vector

8. My Traffic 2013

9. DX 10 Scenery Fixer

10. FS2Crew + EmergencyNGX for PMDG 737 NGX

11. RealAir Duke V2

My Nvidia Inspector settings in the matter of AA are: 4xSGSSAA + 4xMSAA in game which results in almost no shimmering. I am running 1/2 refresh rate Vsync and limited FPS to 30. With Unlimited and no Vsync I get smoother experience but it seems that textures are loading slower.

I also applied some tweaks according to Word Not Allowed's guide, plus change LOD Radius as this didn't affect my FPS at all but gave me better, crisper looks of world to 6,5

Now my question: are there any tweaks I should add to the present .cfg file (in the attachement) to make my SIM better in terms of performance?

On highly loaded airports like Charles de Gaule or Gatwick I get around 12-25 FPS (although please consider that MyTraffic 2013 at 30% level gives more traffic than FSX on default).

The real performance killer are clouds with ASN and REX4 (I am running them in 1024x1024 in REX4 32 bit) because SGSSAA on them causes 99% GPU usage sometimes and that's when my SIM slows down most. Maybe someone can post a suggestion of realistic maximum visibility layer and maximum cloud visibility in ASN options too.

So if anyone can tell me any suggestions to my cfg please do - I will be grateful. I hope this is a correct forum to post that.

Best wishes

One more thing I have to add - lowering airport vehicles to minimum gave me 3-5 FPS more so this is a step forward. I also switched clouds to dxt5 in rex4.

Here is what I did last week and it helped me immensely. I created another User Account called "Flight Simulation" and found about a 30% increase in my performance with smoother flight with no stutters, pauses, better color, sharper scenery and no CTD's or OOM's like I was having in my Default User Account.  I think it lets you simulate a separate computer so that other programs are not started and not using resources while flying.  However you do have to log out of your Default Account in order to close those programs. There is more to this and it would take a while to explain what it takes but you don't even need to reinstall FS by making a shortcut to the fsx.exe to the new user account desktop.  You also don't loose your existing original configuration files like fsx.cfg, scenery.cfg, xml.exe, and so on because they are recreated in the new User Account Roaming folder.  All of your screenshots are put into another new Pictures location as well so there is no mixing with the original files in FSX in the Default User Account.  This could take a lot more involved discussion because this is just the tip of the iceberg. Maybe others have tried this and will chime in.

Just a thought,

PS  You should also setup the new account as an administrator.

That is interesting approach - I never thought about it! I will try it today :) thanks

I have a feeling that I threw too many mods at my fsx but... D*** me it was worth it anyway :)

I will also try to disable enhanced overcast in ASN as I heard its a resource hog

Your new user account is very interesting. Does it double disk space ? Can you explain step by step how you did it so a simpleton like me can understand? Thanks

New user account is probably working better only because it forces a rebuild of the fsx.cfg file, something that should be done first if you have any problems originally. So I don't think that's a good fix. First move your fsx.cfg file to the desktop, let it rebuild, and slowly add tweaks and make sure the game is still running okay.

Try running without AI and road traffic, see what kind of performance you get.

Please be aware that I am still working on the details of why this works for me and if it will work for others. Currently I am ironing out the details of making everything easy to convert from one User Account to another without reinstalling add on programs and such.  Adding a new User Account is a simple thing to do and instructions are easily available from the help section in your Windows Program.  I am using Win7-64 with FSX Acceleration. I have installed a ton of Orbx Scenery, Google Earth V2 western states, REX4, and a lot of payware airports and aircraft.

I am using a computer with the following specs;

Windows 7 Professional (x64) Service Pack 1 (build 7601)

3.20 gigahertz Intel Core i7     960
64 kilobyte primary memory cache
256 kilobyte secondary memory cache
8192 kilobyte tertiary memory cache
64-bit ready
Multi-core (4 total)
Not hyper-threaded

Board: Intel Corporation DX58SO2 AAG10925-207

12278 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 [Display adapter]
SAMSUNG [Monitor] (46.0"vis, November 2010)

Bose USB Audio
High Definition Audio Device
NVIDIA High Definition Audio (4x)

Saitek Pro Flight Throttle Quadrant (HID)
Saitek Pro Flight Throttle Quadrant (USB)
Saitek X52 Pro Flight Controller (HID)
Saitek X52 Pro Flight Controller (USB)
USB Input Device (3x)
Saitek Cyborg Keyboard (HID)

Any further information that is needed please be specific and I can list it in another post.  Norm (fisheye) member of the SimFlite Group

Thank you for your comments however I have done what you stated at least four times without the same success of the new User Account.  I must have two dozen different fsx.cfg files with different tweaks including a bare bones version from a new fsx.cfg rebuild.  As I said I don't know why it works but it does for me and that is all that counts.  Having been into Microsoft Flight Simulation since BAO first released its maiden version before Microsoft bought out the rights to the program some numbers of years ago I have accrued a large amount of experience throughout the years on how to configure and tweak the program.  Don't misread what I said, I am not expert but I have been able to figure out most problems over time.  I may not be able to explain why something works but only that it works for me.  If it works for you, all the better.  If you can explain why it works please do.  Your friend and partner in this passion.  fisheye
