January 7, 200521 yr The FS9 patch 9.1 cured my CTD problems, at least for awhile. Yet several occurred yesterday after I had installed an AFCAD 2 file of KPHX by Richard Mohammed. He has been a very reliable designer of AFCAD files. So after using TTools to spice up AI traffic at KPHX and recompiling, flying out of KPHX at 7000 ft and about 15 miles out the CTD occurred. This was the first CTD since installing the patch, and after using several 3rd party AFCAD 2 files for KORD, KMDW, and KMSP with no problems. Montains, maybe?I've been using KLAS AFCAD 2 for months without a problem.HHmmmmmm.This is a simple, stand alone AFCAD file. Once I removed the modifiedAFCAD file, CTDs stopped. So what in the Mohammed file would cause a CTD? If I knew, then I could avoid same problem when I try to do my own version. Thanks for any advice!!!!Rick (KMKE-fresh 8" snow cover)
January 7, 200521 yr I heard that having more than one AFCAD for the same airport will cause "problems". Make sure you have only one AFCAD for each airport. Sounds like you have some knowledge of what's going on so probably already aware of problems with more than one AFCAD but thought I would mention it anyway as it's my only solution. Hope this helps.Jim
January 7, 200521 yr Parking Spots are an extension of taxiways. Taxiways are a set of complex network pathways connecting to a runway. If you look at the AFCAD you are using you will see that many parking Spots and Gates have the same number duplicated. This corrupts the taxiway network which in turn corrupts the AFCAD and you get a CTD.
January 7, 200521 yr They can, and do cause CTD's...I used to have problems with CTD's at SBRJ, Rio De Janerio, I have Worldsceneries Rio scenery installed, and I ran the AFCADS that came with it through AFCAD, used the "check for errors", and found many, I fixed them, no more CTD's at Rio.So, it may be worth using the "check for errors" feature in AFCAD.Dan.
January 9, 200521 yr Thank you, Folks!I had known that embedded AFCAD files in some scenery packs can cause a CTD. ThanksAt this time, I have no scenery add-ons installed except for stand-alone AFCAD 2 files.I didn't realize that duplicated gate or parking numbers can corrupt an AFCAD file and cause a CTD. This is great knowledge. The default KPHX had a duplicated parking designator. I will keep this in mind at all times when adding my own gates. And I will pay closer attention to using the fault finder utility within AFCAD 2.One thing I noticed though.Pre patch, I made some modifications to KSLC by changing the taxiway surfaces texture. Seems the default shows triangular pieces within taxiway intersections of dis-similar textures. I've noticed dirt textures in the middle of concrete, or asphalt pieces within a concrete intersection. Now when I change the dis-similar piece to be the same texture surrounding it (for example, asphalt to concrete), this seems to cause a CTD.I noticed the same strange mosiac of surface textures at KPHX taxiways that I changed, and a CTD ensued.Strange indeed. I wonder if there is a good AFCAD tutorial around that describes the nuances with AFCAD2. I never had such twitchy behavior with AFCAD 1 and FS2K2. Is this due to the taxiway signs? Thanks!!!Rick (KMKE overcast ceiling 3000 ft)
January 10, 200521 yr Several things can cause that. A park thats not connected to anything can do it. Having an AF2 in the scenerys scenery folder and another in the FS9addon sceneryscenery folder can do it.Always install an AF2 in the FS9addon sceneryscenery folder. Never in the scenerys scenery folder. Your asking for trouble. If you go the library and download the AFCAD2 of Lee Swordy and install it, You can look and check the AF2 out for unconnected items ( there is a checker built in).I Say again, " Never install an AF2 anywhere but the Addon sceneryscenery folder."Joe W. Joe Watson Lake Placid, Florida
January 10, 200521 yr And the problem AFCAD can be for an airport some distance from where the CTD happens.Bruce Bruce Bartlett Frodo: "I wish none of this had happened." Gandalf: "So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."
January 14, 200521 yr There's really a problem now. Checked KPHX AFCAD2 file for errors. The utility found none. But I did notice gates with the same designation, so I re-labeled all the gates and GA parking. There were now no duplicates.Fired up FS9. CTD occurred about 50 miles north at 30,000 ft.OK. Try again. Removed Mohammed's AFCAD2 file and restored default KPHX. No CTDs had happened with the default. But the next CTD occurred 10 minutes out of KPHX flying default Lear from default KPHX.Well now this is getting frustrating. I might uninstall FS9, reinstall FS9 and patch. This is becoming far too troublesome (again).Anyone like to use TTools and AFCAD2 to enhance airport environments?Have you experienced any of this?I have no added scenery except AI traffic and stand-alone AFCAD 2 files for KORD, KMDW, KMKE, and KMSP.CTDs were a problem suddenly before the patch. Now it seems they are back after adding a particular AFCAD file.Any advice would be appreciated again!!Thanks!!Rick (KMKE temps plunging to single digits)
January 14, 200521 yr I also remember there being a problem with AFCADs and duplicated gates and helipads, can't remember exactly what it was. Also, note that just because you are getting CTD at KPHX doenst mean that the airport is the problem, it could be anyother airport in a (i think) 30nm radius.Dan.
January 19, 200521 yr FYI, AFCAD management used to be a nightmare until I found this fantastic freeware utility by Eliot Rogers:ScanAFDhttp://www.nwlink.com/~erog/"This utility is intended to help streamline the managing of AFCAD 2.x AFD files for Flight Simulator 2004. The program reads ICAO codes from each addon AFD file installed and provides a straight-forward means of identifying duplicate airports and renaming or deleting these files. The program can also search for AFDs within scenery addons and identify conflicting files across different sceneries. The app will also display facilities details from within each AFD (parking spots, parking codes and runways), giving you more information when deciding which file to keep out of one or more duplicates."-- Walt
