January 10, 200521 yr HiI'm looking at 19" lcd monitors and it appears that most of the ones within my budget (upto
January 10, 200521 yr Short answer yes.Long answer, would be a good idea to try it out first if possible, many monitors do not perform to the figures supplied by manufacturers, either better or worse.CRT junkies will tell you otherwise, but the is no technical reason not to buy an LCD.Also, this would have been better in the hardware forum ;)Dan.
January 10, 200521 yr Im one of those CRT junkies http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/contri...y/corkysm20.gifEveryones different of course but theres two main personal reasons I wont go in for an LCD (having had first-hand access to friends who bought them):1. Ghosting in fast-moving games & while watching movies2. Dead pixels. These things seem to appear even on a brand new screen. Although I have to say I have yet to see a dead pixel on an LCD screen made my Apple! But its your call - if it looks good to *your* eyes: get it!Because in the end - thats what matters isnt it! :)
January 10, 200521 yr But thats just the thing, the 2 points you said are all but gone.I play CS:Source, HL2, watch movies etc etc, and NEVER see any ghosting at all, and my screen came with zero dead pixels. Those points are all old issues that are not present on DECENT newer panels. As I said previous, there is NO technical reason not to buy an LCD.Dan.
January 10, 200521 yr If the LCD has 25ms refreshrate you *will* get lag. Only the 16ms and lower are essentially free from this. However it's not that bad and since FS is a relatively slow-paced game you won't notice it much.Re: dead pixels - my fairly new (9 months maybe) Samsung 193T 19" LCD had a red one, as well as an area near the right side where there's a small discoloured area which is noticable especially against grey backgrounds. Both problems were there when I got the screen and Samsung would not replace it. Unvelievable as it may seem, the companies still put out defective LCD monitors and expect you to not care. This is about the only industry I know of that does this. When buying an LCD it's best to buy it at a local store and have them unpack it and let you try it. There are guides on the web (Google...) for things to look for to make sure the screen is free from defects. Finally make sure it has a native resolution that you're happy with as its the only one at which you'll get decent image quality. They look like shite at anything other than the native resolution. -
January 10, 200521 yr G'dayI have just gone over to a 15ms LCD and i can see lag and blur while panning so i am not sure how bad 25ms will look but it wont be to flash. Also don't expext photo's to look as good in detail up real close.I love how much space i save and the lag at 15ms is only viewable with fast panning and in flight you hardly can tell the diff.Dark contrasts are not as clear or sharp either.LCD's are good but don't come near CRT quality for many purposes but save lots of power and space. If i had the space i'd go back to a crt for the quality in imaging.I have a 19" Acer with 15ms response.Nice LCD but the only people who will tell you a crt is better than a crt build LCD's.SeeyaDarren
January 10, 200521 yr Let's put it this way:Imagine that the new technology in the block is the CRT and not LCD:Not counting on price the comentarys one would listen would be:" MY GOD those new CRT are a blast, what Image Quality, suberb!!! And one can actualy change thee resolution , and the refresh rate, ohh and say godbye to dead pixels.... on the down side, there is the HUGE size, and massive power consuption, but IQ makes up 100X more that that..."so, personaly, unless you have absolutly no space to spare, or can
January 10, 200521 yr I got a 17" ViewSonic VE175 LCD for AUD$350 = 141.532 GBP. Its response time is 16ms and its excellent for gaming and FS. Most LCD's now come with a dead Pixel warranty. Mine has a 6 month dead pixel warranty. Also remember that a 17" LCD screen area is almost the size of an 19" CRT! Monitor. Mine is anyway!

Mine is anyway!>> I work in the video business and actually work daily with displays that are worth 20 to over 100 thousand dollars each. DLP, LCD, CRT, you name it and we make it. Very high end niche market stuff. I just bought a 19" Viewsonic CRT monitor over the Internet for about $250. It arrived today and I hooked it up tonight and it is great! Replaced my Dell 17" CRT (16" viewable) with the 19" (18") viewable and just the 2" increase makes a considerable difference in the appearance of the sim when I am flying my PMDG. I also can run my PCI bus video card ( I know but when I bought the PC I didn't intend on getting back into flying FS) at 1024x768 and don't have to bog my frame rates down trying to match the resolution of a higher res LCD Screen. Dot pitch on this monitor , for the money, is excellent. The only down side I see to this CRT monitor is the size, but who cares, it sits on my computer desk with plenty of room to spare. Proves the old adage, bigger is better :)
January 11, 200521 yr I have a 21" Viewsonic G790. You can probably find this monitor for about $100. I've had it six years. I run in 1600x1200 at 72hz. It has been flawless, and is probably the "smartest" purchase I ever made on computer equipment. I'd like to see ONE person that is happy with a LCD they've had for six years- even six years from now. It won't happen- they are getting better, but they are not as good as CRTs yet. I The whole "space saving" argument is just lame. What-you don't have the extra square foot of desk space? I guarantee you can get a new desk at Staples cheaper than a new (decent) LCD. LCDs are for techno geeks. Usually the type of guys that don't even play Half Life 2 or Doom - they just run the time demo, and hang out on forums bragging about their water-cooled-neon-blue-LAN-party-mini-tower. Bigger is better :)ADDENDUM: Right from the horse's mouth:The following is taken directly off Viewsonic's website. Which feature list do you want for Flight Sim? I have taken the liberty of commenting on each "Feature"LCD:1)Sleek, space-saving design. These new designs leave more room on your desk (and can be wall-mounted, too). PERFECTLY MATCHES YOUR POTTERY BARN DECOR FOR METROSEXUAL HEAVEN!!!2)Ergonomic features. Reduced eye strain from a brighter, flicker-free screen with virtually no glare. GLARE? NO SELF-RESPECTING FLIGHT SIM PILOT LETS GLARE STOP HIM.3)Better total cost of ownership (TCO). With twice the lifespan, one-third the electricity usage and minimal heat output compared to similar-sized CRT monitor. THAT'S SUPER! BECAUSE THEY COST TWICE AS MUCH ANYWAY!4)Safety. LCDs are safer to use because they have no electromagnetic radiation. 20 YEARS IN FRONT OF A CRT AND I'M STILL 20/13.5)Price. LCDs are now more affordable than ever! FERRARIS ARE ALSO- THE F340 IS FASTER THAN THE F50 FOR ONLY $200,000!!! RELATIVELY SPEAKING...CRT:1)Excellent Value. CRTs have come very inexpensive for entry-level models, and high-end full-featured displays are now more affordable than ever. TRIED, TRUE, AND CHEAP. 2)Precise images. CRTs provide exceptional detail for everything from CAD/CAM applications to word processing, spreadsheets and family photos. ENOUGH SAID... OH WAIT, LET'S REITERATE THIS POINT AND REPHRASE IT AGAIN BELOW BECAUSE THEY KICK BUTT... 3)Vibrant, realistic images . . . even in motion. A full spectrum of rich, saturated colors with incredible depth and superior video response make CRTs perfect for gaming, graphic design, or even watching TV with a ViewSonic video processor. Point three is all you should have to read.
January 11, 200521 yr Gary,A week ago, I took my chances and bought a 19' LCD Monitor. The LG L1915 with a refresh rate of 12ms for just 400
January 11, 200521 yr Gary,I have the 17inch samsung 172x. 3 months old and I do like it. Ghosting & Blur is difficult to notice. It's rated as having a 12ms response time. Compared with my 15inch CRT, the graphics are much crisper - a definite plus if you have complex panels. Also has dual analog/digital input if you have two PC's like me.Problems:- Colours are difficult to properly calibrate- 1 dead pixel (stuck on grey) noticed one week after purchase (barely noticable however). The Samsung 172x is currently
January 11, 200521 yr I second Anthony's post. I also have the Samsung 172x. But, I didn't have any problems with colour, and no dead pixels. I've had it since last year, and it's been great. Flightsim, Halfa Life 2, Counter Strike Source, Unreal Tournament, Far Cry, Graphic Design, 3D Modeling, watching DVDs, everything looks wonderful (to me).
January 11, 200521 yr Thanks for all your advice guys - although at this point in time, i'm still not totally sure which avenue to take.Looking at 19" CRT's certainly is an eye-opener with regard to price and performance eg, LG T910B - resolution upto 2048 * 1536 @ 60 hz (irrelevant i) but 1024 * 768 @ 85Hz all for
