How to get three monitors to look the same

Featured Replies

Hi I'm running three monitors, they're all the same model I'm running the using tripleheadtogo however I can't get them to look the same ie colour and brightness etc despite setting them with equal settings, I have tried adjusting the monitors seperate but the still look different, it's annoying when using fsx and the scenery looks different on each monitor, are there any software I can use to calibrate each monitor so it looks the same .

Thanks,jim

thank you,Jim

Hi Jim.

Surprising that same model monitors would look so different.

Are they all the same age?

Do they look different just in a FSX or all the time?

Yes all three where purchased at a couple of years apart but I'm pretty sure I could get them to look pretty much the same, someone suggested monitor calibration wizard a try.

They look a bit different on the desktop but in the past they have all looked the same hopefully the monitor calibration tool will help to get them looking a bit better, I will report back.

If your GPU sends one signal to the tripleheadtogo and the tripleheadtogo splits that signal and sends it to each monitor, then the answer is no other than the way you are trying by visually trying to adjust each monitor with their OSD controls.

If you had each monitor connected to a GPU then you could use software and a hardware puck to make them look the same, but the software and hardware can get pricey.  A classic case of you get what you pay for.

Here is one example.

To try it manually using your display's OSD controls maybe this site will help.

As idahosurge says above calibration probably will not help much matching the three.

It will help in getting one right so you can eyeball the others to it though using the monitors hardware controls.

Have you tried setting each monitor back to it's factory default setting?

You should be able to match all three by use of the on screen button controls. It's a trial and error process- try first adjusting the outers to match the middle mon. As you get closer, play with the middle mon colour & mode buttons. Be prepared to go back and forth and spend some hours.

Also be sure to do this under same ambient lighting conditions as when you are simming.

It's worth the effort- I ran 3 different mons- 17" Acer & IBM, with an ancient 18" CRT in the middle. Attached screenie shows how close you can come.

(Foreground is Vancouver Island, USA in the distance. Horizon is bent because screen shots assume the monitors are in a straight line line rather than angled in an arc around thepilot's eyes) Be sure also that the monitors are square to your eyes and the bezels fully in contact with each other- probably needing some shims under the bases to accomplish this.)

Chances are good that even monitors from the same production run will have variations in colour balance that need to be worked out to fool your eye/brain combination into seeing an apparent single image!

I work with visual systems for real world ATC Tower simulators ... Unless your monitors are from the same batch there is an increased chance of visual errors even if there the same model, sounds like you may need a Spyder to calabrate your monitors.

I use a TH2go and there great.

Hope you get it sorted.

Calibration wizard was ok for one monitor, reset to default settings but all three monitors looked different so spent a few hours of and on adjusting each monitor took a while but this is the best results I've had, flying with fsx set to dawn one of the monitors looks a little bit dark, nearly all my flying is vfr so not really a problem.

In one of the screenshots above there is no bezels on the monitors do you purchase them like this or have the bezels been removed it looks great would like to try doing that myself if it's possible.

Thanks,jim

jim-

The bezels are there but-

Screenshots do not show bezels- they just slide the 3 images together side by side. Screenies also assume the three images are in a straight line- where, in fact, the monitors are placed in an arc around the pilot's eyes. Just like the curved screen in a movie theater.

The result is that screen shots show a slightly distorted view- not very accurate to what the sim pilot actually sees.

You need to colour balance all monitors- if one is a bit darker, adjust it to try to match the others- or adjust two to match the other.

It can be a bit tedious but worth the effort.

Be sure each monitor is square to the pilots eyes-  and the bezels are in close contact with each other for their full length - this likely means placing wedges under the bases. (If the mid monitor is slanted back a bit, then the outer ones will have to tilted up sideways a bit to keep the bezels touching for their full length & all screens (center point) at 90º to your eyes.)

When everything is nicely setup, the bezels just seem to disappear!

And yes, once you get everything right, VFR is the only way to go!

  • 2 weeks later...

I have a 3-monitor setup; 3 LG 20in monitors.  I found that I can get the best color/brightness match by insuring that the gamma selection for all the monitors is the same.    I can set the gamma to "0", "1" or "2".

I set all the monitors to "Gamma 1" and they all match up very closely.

Not sure if this might apply to your monitors but I think all or most monitors have gamma selections.
