Is it worth it?

Hi all

looking for a bit of advice on this, sorry if this spans two forums but think this might be the better of the two

I have some money to spare and was wondering if I should save it towards a complete new system or upgrade some of what I have already

I'm quite happy how fsx runs although I'm always looking for those couple of extra fps

I currently have an oc 2700k running at 4.7ghz

I have a gtx580 card and 8gb of ram.So I was thinking about upgrading my graphic card to a gtx 780ti and putting another 8gb of ram in

I know that the ram will make no difference to fsx due to the 32bit 4gb limits but as I have some other programs that are running whilst fsx is on I thought that might help them a bit

So will the graphic card help anything in terms of fps etc I may add an ssd also

Or would I be better off saving for a new system I'm only looking for a  bit of an improvement as how I have it just now is almost perfect for me flying out of egll with uk2000 v3 and ultimate 2 ai and opus weather I get between 17-20 fps if I could get a steady 20 that would be ideal

Your thoughts please

I think you are pretty near the max.

You could update your video card, but I would personally not, because however exciting it is, it won't bring you what you are hoping for.

I upgraded my gtx 570 to a 770 and didn't really see a big difference.

don't forget that your fps are mostly limited by your cpu, especially by the 1st core in use, which is usually the bottleneck.

I don't know if you have already, but I would start with trying Steves DX10 tool and see if you can get an extra bit by offloading the cpu a bit.

I always recommend people to monitor their video card usage before upgrading, because if you have never done that you could be very surprised by how little FSX uses of it.

Download EVGA Precision and see for your self. I bet you FSX is using less than half of what your current card has to offer.

That being said, if you are thinking about going P3D or Xplane in the future, you will see great benefit from a card upgrade.

If you are running DX10, a new video card would help a little, but as outofphaze said, you probably won't be happy with the small improvement. A 10% gain at 20 fps only nets 22fps. :(

CPU speed is king and we need a 8GHz cpu to make FSX fly well.

As someone who recently upgraded to a 780ti, I could spend awhile going on about how great it is, but sadly, it's greatness means little for FSX.  However, it really shines with any other games I throw at it, and it makes P3Dv2 a wonderful experience as well.

thanks guys

I think I will be going down the p3d route once some of the probs are ironed out a bit more so might get the card and continue tweaking

do you think its worth the bother of more mem got 8gb was thinking of putting another 8 in.At the moment I get fairly close to free mem when I have fsx plus external addons running

cheers
