April 19, 201412 yr What is standard operating procedure (in real life) if/when PFD/MFD in a 777 malfunctions? Dive bomb it and hope you find the airport, of course. Captain Kevin Air Kevin 124 heavy, wind calm, runway 4 left, cleared for take-off. Live streams of my flights here.

April 19, 201412 yr About a year ago I did my usual peering into the cockpit of an A321 at KEWR when the pilots invited me in to chat. The PIC told me that he once lost all screens flying a 767. I asked how he flew the plane and he tapped his finger on the backup instruments. I regret that I didn't think to ask how he navigated. Sooo... How would one navigate -- 100% cloud cover, night, rural location? Over the ocean? Would it be crazy to get out one's cell phone and use the GPS? Thanks, Mike
April 19, 201412 yr You cant navigate without displays ofcourse. ATC is your best friend in those cases. A friend of mine had the same thing happen to him on the B767, night, North Atlantic Track! Came with an enourmous list of EICAS malfunctions too! Nothing made sense untill they found a few very importan circuit breakers were popped. Pushing those back in restored everything. Very funny, that 'll wake you up! Rob Robson

Over the ocean on a nat track -- yikes! Even in flightsim land woke me up -- once I cranked up the failure rate flying the T7 Toronto to Heathrow. Started getting screen failures and soon figured out that not all screens can display the nav info. Not knowing when I would lose the nav display, diverted to Keflavik to be on the safe side. Mike Not at my FSX computer right now, but doesn't the 767-300 display lat/lon on the overhead near the inertial alignment switches? If one knew the lat/lon of one's destination, one might be able to use this information to navigate without the nav screens, especially with the help of a magnetic compass. I think the 777 displays this information on the CDU. So if inertial or GPS information were still available, one might be able to navigate within range of ATC from an oceanic location with all main screens out (but not at least one CDU in the T7), I think.Mike
