March 26, 201412 yr Orbx Northern California Tour - Leg 2Starting at Mammoth Yosemite Airport (KMMH), fly direct to waypoint over Yosemite valley, then turn (heading 339) flying over Hetch Hetchy canyon, the Hoover & Carson Iceburg Wilderness before landing at Alpine County (M45). The route continues north flying over Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America. Its depth is 1,645 ft, making it the second-deepest in the United States (the deepest is Crater Lake in Oregon at 1,945 ft.) Stopping at Truckee-Tahoe Airport (KTRK), the route then turns northwest (heading 299) for 53 miles to the Gold Rush town of Quincy, landing at Ganser Field (2O1), then on to Rogers Field (O05) on the shores of Lake Almanor which was created in 1927 when the north fork of the Feather River was dammed flooding the meadow filled valley. From Rogers Field the next waypoint is 36 miles northwest (heading 313) to Burney Mountain. The route passes to the east of Lassen Peak, (the southernmost volcanic peak in the Cascade Range) and to the west of Cinder Cone both of which are well depicted as photo real scenery areas in the Orbx NCA scenery. From the Burney Mountain waypoint the route turns southwest (heading 234) for 38 miles to Redding with a landing at Benton Field (O85). The final airport is Weed (O46) which is 54 miles north of Benton Field. Rather than flying direct, follow the Sacramento River up to Shasta Dam and over Shasta Lake, then follow the Interstate (I5) up the upper Sacramento River past the Castle Crags Wilderness, with Mount Shasta above and to the east. Mount Shasta dominates the northern California landscape. It rises abruptly and stands nearly 10,000 ft above the surrounding terrain. The mountain consists of four overlapping volcanic cones which have built a complex shape, including the main summit and the prominent satellite cone of 12,330 Shastina. If time permits cimb and circle the mountain before landing at the final airport Weed (O46). Because NCA Leg 2 is a relatively long , a fast plane (220knts) cabable of good performance at 15000 feet it is recommended so it can be completed within 2 hrs. March 28, 201412 yr I should be there tomorrow. Now I've got 24 hours to learn to fly the Trojan well enough to not embarrass myself...
March 28, 201412 yr Great! I have been practising with the T28 and I am now pro standard. B) What? Why you laff? :unknw: The World is divided into two groups. Those who say "Give me a link" and those that provide the link. WWG1WGA
March 29, 201412 yr Some screen shots from tonight's flight. Waiting for stragglers. Mind you, it was getting late. Lil Canary bird. Hey momma, will he crash? Shh son, just wait and see. Another one safely down. I'm up here! This last one was tricky and it doesn't do justice to some pretty naughty flying! Good flight all. The World is divided into two groups. April 16, 201412 yr "This last one was tricky and it doesn't do justice to some pretty naughty flying!" Re: It was SVFR and we "were" in military trainers  It's been a while and I've been holding on to some screeny's and factoids.. This is a shot of all of us. Trivia.. Can you distinguish the sub models from this photo? & why? The winner gets a brand new, super deluxe, "French Fryer" ! ( Hint - 2 AF versions, the rest Navy, forget the paints) Nick and I getting temps up to snuff before the run to the Yosemite Village waypoint- Just a nice day - things WILL change The weather is changing and Rolf is tight on my tail. The way it looks I believe I forgot to shave this morning. - It doesn't look good. Nick is over the fence and looking good - tough little approach VFR wise. The weather got much worse. Did a perfect downwind, base and approach due to traffic. Had a nasty-&@($* sinus thing, higher than a kite on anti-histamines. Tip - When the gear horn is going off, listen to it. Fact - Drug induced flying is not good. I have to quote the BBC America show, Top Gear.. "It buffed out splendidly" That is my story,,,,, and I am sticking to it. This shot get's everyone I've shown it to - Going up? Going Down? Which way is up? Right turn? Left maybe? It's visually weird. It was the hard break over Shasta Lake. Lead called "Let's take the river and hit the dam - 100 agl max". - I followed with a hard left dive. Broke a couple rivets in the wings spars yankin 'n bankin w/ Bry, Jeff & Ron over the Sacramento River @ 100 feet. Got out of the soup and decided to actually hit at least one waypoint (LOL) and get my bird home - Taking a left turn around the edge of mount Shasta escaping the low cover and realizing it's time to go home, the Sun is escaping quickly. We're VFR. The sun is going down, weather is getting bad, rapidly... It's good to see everyone is on their way since Jeff was buying $1000 hamburgers and $500 cocktails at Silvia's, 1886 Shastina Dr, Weed, CA 96094-9712 ------------------------------------------------------------------ These gentlemen did a splendid job doing the flyover for the playoff game , KGRB vs KSFO 05JAN14. Back story, it was supposed to be a 3 ship flyover with one on standby. 2 of the gents could not make it, no way, no how. A line of severe icing stretching from Minn. to TX hindered them from making it up nort. I digest, my co-pilot Samantha did not like them whatsoever, we've had F-18s, F-14s, F-16s KC-135s, UH-60s & others that fly right over the house for the celebratory flyover. Of all of them, she went the most "ape-######" when the 2 Trojans came over, low, really low. The hound went CRAZY! Once you've heard a 28, you will never forget. (The video does not represent, nor was I there, at home taking care of a hound w/ ear damage.) ------------------------------------------------------------------ Just some 'ol shots from KOSH - FS RTWR SHRS F-111 JoinFS Little Navmap
