April 1, 201412 yr Author Northern California Tour Leg 3 Narrative I have collected some fun facts about the NCA route for your entertainment. The route starts at Weed Airport (O46). Weed The town of Weed gets its name from the founder of the local lumber mill and pioneer Abner Weed , who discovered that the area's strong winds were helpful in drying lumber. By the 1940s Weed boasted the world's largest sawmill. Weed is also mentioned in John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men as being the town that George Milton and Lennie Small are fleeing from at the beginning of the book. Fly northeast (hdg 023) for 33nm accross the Cascade Range to the first airport Butte Valley (A32). Butte Valley This basin in northeastern Siskiyou County has some of the deepest and richest soils in the state, producing alfalfa, potatoes, horseradish, and brewing barley. Butte Valley nurseries are the leading source of premium strawberry plants in North America. Fly north (hdg 348) for 42nm across Klamath Lake to Chiloquin State (2S7). Klamath Lake Upper Klamath Lake is the largest remnant of Lake Modoc, a giant lake that existed in the region until about 10,000 years ago. At its largest, Lake Modoc covered over 1,000 square miles (more than ten times the size of present day Upper Klamath Lake and sat nearly 100 feet (30 m) higher in elevation. Lake Modoc disappeared at the end of the Pleistocene due to a warming and drying climate. The lake is naturally eutrophic, due to a high concentration of nutrients. In the 20th century, the augmentation of nutrients by agricultural runoff from the surrounding farming valley has caused the lake to become hypereutrophic, resulting in blue-green algae blooms over the lake which turn the water an opaque green in the summer and reduce the opportunity for recreational uses of the lake. Fly north northwest (hdg 319) 24nm to Crater Lake waypoint, then turn (hdg 304) for 22nm to Toketee State (3S6). Crater Lake Crater Lake partly fills a nearly 2,148-foot deep caldera that was formed around 7,700 years ago[ by the collapse of the volcano Mt Mazama. Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States with a maximum depth of 1,949 feet and second deepest in North America after Great Slave Lake in Canada. Due to several unique factors, mainly that the lake has no inlets, the waters of Crater Lake are some of the purest because of the absence of pollutants. Clarity readings from a Secchi disk have consistently been in the 80 to 115-foot range, which is very clear for any natural body of water. In 1997, scientists recorded a record clarity of 142 ft. Fly west (hdg 254) for 41nm over twin lakes mountain to Roseburg Regional (KRBG) Roseburg Blast On August 7, 1959, at approximately 1:00 a.m., the Gerretsen Building Supply Company caught fire. Firefighters soon arrived at the building, located near Oak and Pine street, to extinguish the fire. Earlier in the evening, a truck driver for the Pacific Powder Company, George Rutherford, had parked his explosives truck in front of the building, a fact which went unnoticed until shortly before the truck exploded at around 1:14 a.m., destroying buildings in an eight-block radius and severely damaging 30 more blocks. The truck was loaded with two tons of dynamite and four-and-a-half tons of the blasting agent nitro carbo nitrate. Fourteen people died in the blast and fire and 125 were injured. Damage was estimated at ten to twelve million dollars; the Powder company was eventually made to pay $1.2 million in civil damages, but was acquitted of criminal wrongdoing. Fly south southwest (hdg 193) 32nm to Calvert Peak STOLport (OR73) Aircraft Incident/Accident Report Calvert Peak Airport NTSB Narrative Summary Released at Completion of Accident THE PILOT OF THE CESSNA 182J TOUCHED DOWN BEYOND MIDPOINT ON THE 1600 FOOT CLOSED RUNWAY ON THE SUMMIT OF A MOUNTAIN. THE AIRCRAFT BOUNCED OR SKIPPED FOR APPROXIMATELY 377 FEET, THEN TOUCHED DOWN AGAIN APPROXIMATELY 500 FEET FROM THE END. HEAVY BRAKING MARKS WERE OBSERVED BETWEEN THERE AND THE RUNWAY END, WHICH DROPS OFF OVER A CLIFF. THE AIRCRAFT WRECKAGE WAS FOUND APPROXIMATELY 250 FEET BELOW AND 1/4 MILE FROM THE END OF THE RUNWAY. NTSB Probable Cause Narrative THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO USE ALL AVAILABLE RUNWAY FOR THIS LANDING, AGGRAVATED BY HIS FAILURE TO INITIATE A GO-AROUND AFTER MISJUDGING THE PROPER TOUCHDOWN POINT AND LANDING WITH A TAILWIND. Fly southwest (hdg 217) for 38nm to final destination of Gold Beach (4S1) This final section of the route follows the Rogue River through the Wild Rogue Wilderness Area the past Agness to Gold Beach. Winkle Bar Airstrip & Zane Grey Cabin For an additional challenge, after departing from Calvert Peak descend directly down the steep canyon to the Rogue River and follow to Winkle Bar (OR74) for a touch and go. Good Luck. Although not depicted Winkle Bar is also the location of Zane Grey's Cabin which has been preserved as an historic site. Zane Grey was was an American author best known for his popular adventure novels and stories that presented an idealized image of the American frontier, Riders of the Purple Sage (1912) was his best-selling book. Zane Grey bought a mining claim in 1926 at Winkle Bar and built a crude one-room cabin of peeled logs and hand-split shingles. Video Rogue River Feud River Mail Boats The remote and hard to reach settlements on the Rogue River between Agness and Gold Beach have been served by mail boats since 1895. By the 1960s, rudderless jetboats powered by twin or triple 280-horsepower engines, began to replace propeller-driven boats. The jetboats could safely negotiate shallow riffles, and the largest could carry nearly 50 passengers. As of 2010, jet boats, functioning mainly as excursion craft, still deliver mail between Gold Beach and Agness | Windows 11 | ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO | i9-14900K | RTX 4090 | 64GB CORSAIR VENGEANCE DDR5 | 4TB Samsung 990 PRO M.2 | 2x 4TB Samsung 990 PRO M.2 | CORSAIR AX1600i ATX Titanium | LG C2 42 Inch 4K OLED |
