August 3, 201411 yr For the last couple of weeks I my FSX is going to a black screen without any warnings. Its strange because I can still hear sounds and get back into the sim but its getting annoying. I updated drivers, did a CFG rebuild, even purchased a new video card after reinstalling fsx. I'm trying to avoid a total uninstall but I've run out of suspects. Thanks, Arluster Turner III
August 4, 201411 yr Hi Arluster, I recently wrote a topic about the infamous black screen problem in the CTD Forum - http://forum.avsim.net/topic/448362-black-screen-at-freeflight-and-after-loading-fsx/ . This may not be the problem you are having but maybe worth a look. Usually when FSX freezes up with a dark screen with sound running in the background, it means you are running low on memory resources. You may have your settings set too high. A bad tweak will do this too but I see you rebuilt your fsx.cfg rebuild and that would have removed the tweaks. Make sure you have highmemfix=1 in the Graphics section of your fsx.cfg. It could also be caused by a bad overclock. Your Dram settings in the BIOS may be incorrect or you may have too high or too low CPU voltage settings. If you are overclocked, you might want to save the settings and then reset your bios to the Optimal Defaults and see if this fixes the problem. I have encountered this problem in the past and fixed it by lowering my settings. Best regards, Jim Young | AVSIM Online! - Simming's Premier Resource! August 4, 201411 yr Author Okay thanks. I will look into it. I also read somewhere FSdreamteam products can do this too and I recently installed GSX. I just ran an update that replaced some DLLs so maybe that was the culprit. I've never had memory issues before and my sliders are set at mid level except the scenery radius but I'll mess with those too. It happens with default and PMDG aircraft also. Arluster Turner III
August 4, 201411 yr Arluster, I was getting black screens, blue screens and CTD. After some research, many of these symptoms lead back to heat related issues. I clean the dust out of the fan blades on my CPU's heat sink, cleaned off the old thermal paste, then cleaned the heat sink and CPU face with alcohol, and applied new thermal paste. No more black screens, blue screen or CTD. And, my FPS increased 30% being the CPU is now running much cooler. It's like I just reinstalled the OS. Simple to do and worth a try if your CPU is air cooled. The results could surprise you as they did me. Good luck. Cheers, Brian Brian Green
August 4, 201411 yr Author Thanks Brian, I'll try that too. I just removed the overclock from my processor and setting the sliders low. Man this FSX thing lol..but we love it! Arluster Turner III

August 5, 201411 yr Author Okay I found the problem. Around the same time I purchased GSX I also installed a new printer and after using the process of elimination, I decided to uninstall the printer software to see if that would work. Surprisingly, I haven't had a single black screen event since removing it. So after a FSX reinstall, new video card, removing overclocks and checking hardware settings, it was something as simple as a printer driver. Can you IT guys out there offer an explanation? Thanks, Les T. Arluster Turner III
