Reinstalling sp2... and sp1

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I recently moved my fs install from a temporary virtual machine to a nice rig. After doing some research, I learnt that in order to get rid of unable to read memory errors, I have to reinstall sp1 and sp2. I can't install sp2 because sp1 keeps installing into C:\ and not E:\. Also, neither fsx nor sp1 show up in add or remove programs. I will not reinstall FSX. Can somebody help me with this?

SP1 and SP2 look in your system registry for where FSX is located on your computer. If the product was not installed properly, then it cannot find it. So you need to install FSX, run it at least once, then install SP1. I recommend the following guide for installing FSX:

There is no other solution other than to try a repair (insert your DVD's and select repair). Make sure you repair SP1, SP2, Acceleration as appropriate.

Did you know that when you move FSX from one hard drive (or virtual machine) to another hard drive (or to a new computer), the registry keys did not move with the product? The System Registry tells your software where it is located on your hard drive. So, when you update the software, like installing SP1 or SP2, the update will look in your registry to locate where the product is installed. If you just moved it from one disk to another disk and did not move the registry entries too, then the updates simply will not work. If the registry repair tool that Doug recommended above does not work, then you have no further choice but to reinstall. FSX does not work on a virtual machine so make sure it is no longer on a virtual machine and you have fsx installed in C:\FSX or C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X. You need the files that are in the hidden folders too (more info in the how to uninstall/reinstall document I furnished above).

For the second error - "whenever I try to start FSX using FPS limiter, I get a error saying that it could not load limiter_d3d9.dll - error code 126" that appears to be a problem with the FPS limiter. FSX does not like external FPS limiters.

In regards to memory could not be read, hopefully you have not turned off DEP. Was this related to FSX or another program. You should check your Event Viewer (see AVSIM CTD Guide) and see if there are any events that might have caused this.
