I am using vPilot, PMDG 777 and FS2Crew V1.0 and find that I am unable to contact voice ATC via VATSIM without the HM button ON.

This is not made clear in the manual.

Are you sure, because Hard Mute doesn't affect the mic or anything.

 

All it does is prevent the FO from acting on what the speech recognition system hears.

 

 

Can any other VATSIM/IVAO pilots confirm this either way?

Unfortunately my current flight CYVR-EGLL has no online ATC against which to retest my statement. But at the time the controller agreed that this appeared to be the case.

I set the PTT button as the same soft mute button, so when I push the PTT it mutes the fs2crew.

Correct, FS2Crew does not mute the mic with Hard Mute/Soft Mute.

 

All it does is essentially tie the FO's hands behind his back so the FO can't act on what is heard.

 

I suspect Richard had some other Mic issue or Squawkbox issue, but again, see if it happens again.

I have my FS2Crew Soft Mute and vPilot Vatsim PTT set to the same button on my joystick.  I have just tried contacting Manchester Ground on Vatsim and it worked ok, normal voice comms and Fs2crew soft mute.
