Migrating X plane from Windows to Mac system

Featured Replies

I'm wondering if it's possible to migrate the xplane x installation, together with addond, from a Windows to a Mac computer? I have previously been using XPX on a Windows 8.1 system, but now have a new iMac and would like to install the same XPX configuration onto the new Mac. Even if it was possible other than the .exe file which I could work around,

Thanks, Bruce.

Yes it is. Just copy the folder over.

You can then run the installer/updater and it'll get the Mac apps for you.

Third party payware is something that you'll need to deal with on a case by case basis.

The better stuff will just work. Some thing may need a re-install.

Be aware though that the Mac OpenGL drivers are "less than ideal".

If you're after FPS numbers above all else you're better off using Windows or Linux.

If you're after a comfortable OS and a nice computer, Mac will do the job well enough.

(I use an iMac and OSX.. could care less about chasing 10 more fps at any cost.)

This is what I do , I use it both on linux and Windows. I just install under linux and copy over all the folders from the windows stuff. Just check for update after that.

Thanks ben and ironmaiden,

I installed the base XPX on the new iMac yesterday, and updated to the current version. So, my question is obviously one of avioding reinstalling all of the addons, although it looks like some may need to be reinstalled from ben's reply.

I will try copying over the folders into my Mac XPX from Windows, re-run the installer and see what happens...

Ben, I've alrady noted the fps hit and loss of fluidity on the iMac, compared to the Windows install. I don't run in Full Screen mode, so I assume that XPX assumes the resolution of the monitor if not in full screen? The Windows is a 1080p monitor, the iMac is a 5k so not comparable for sure for fps. I tried running the Mac install in full screen and at 1080p, to gt a better comparison, but the visuals looked low-res when I did that. If the Windows is defaulting to 1080p in non-full-screen mode then it looks much higher res.

I alos tried running the Mac install at 4k in "custom res", but it's a slide show...

Thanks for your replies, much appreciated.

What's the iMac config ?

Hi ironmaiden,

Thanks for your reply...  I've pasted from "About my Mac" screen with CPU, GPU and system/video memory... probably more than you asked  :).  Sorry this took so long to reply, I have been at work.

--------

Processor Name: Intel Core i7

  Processor Speed: 4 GHz

  Number of Processors: 1

  Total Number of Cores: 4

L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB

  L3 Cache: 8 MB

  Memory: 32 GB

------

AMD Radeon R9 M295X:

Chipset Model: AMD Radeon R9 M295X

  Type: GPU

  Bus: PCIe

  PCIe Lane Width: x16

  VRAM (Total): 4096 MB

  Displays:

         Display Type: Retina LCD

  Resolution: 5120 x 2880 Retina

  Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)

My PC is a homebuilt (by me) machine that has a i7-2700K at 3.5 GHZ  (not overclocked), 8GB of system memory, with a GTX 780 with 8GB of ram.  Running Win 8.1.   Monitor is a 1080p.

I have always run my sims in windowed mode, which for a PC simply assumes the resolution that is set in the system.  But I'm not sure what that means for XPX running on a Mac in "windowed mode", in terms of the resolution being generated in the sim, other than the pull-down menu in XPX is much smaller on the Mac indicating that the res is higher (I think)..

Thanks,  Bruce.

Actually I got the reverse of this. I used to have Windows 7 installed on bootcamp for running FSX on my mac and I tried running X-Plane 10 on it using the latest AMD drivers. Mac OS X outperformed it in every way on the same hardware.

@brucek

Both your system are capable of running XPX well.

I use a downclocked i5 to 1.6 on the laptop in Windows and very nice. I have dual boot on the laptop with linux. And in Linux @1.8 is great.

Heck I use to run it on my laptop when I had made it a hackintosh.  I never had any issues. And that R295x is a monster of a card.

To my knowledge Apple makes there own GPU drivers.

What fps are you getting in XPX with what settings? Please use the counter which shows you the component being hit.

Maybe it's a vsync issue. I don't know how to do that in a Mac. Try full screen. A windowed mode in XPX should use the screen res.

Thanks-  do you mean in the Output Data screen, setting the frame rate (item 0) to 1?  That gives me two frame counters plus some data on the system components, which I'm not sure about yet.  Is this the data that you are requesting?

I could give you several figures at different rendering settings if you want...

Thanks,  Bruce.

Under Settings

 Data Input & Output

DATA Set - select all 0 - framerate.

This will show you the CPU usage and GPU usage.

Thanks- OK, this is a quick look at what is going on, I can do some more later:

Sim is set to "NOT full screen", , "do not lock". HDR is on, objects set at "lots", traffic as "Chicago suburbs". Textures set as "Very high" (set last night as everything looked a little blurry compared to the Windows machine at 1080p, such as the runway numbers.

I have still to copy folders over from my Windows machine, so this is a new install updated to 10.31. Daytime, clear, Baron sitting at KDEN threshold runway 17 L.

1. 2X SSAA+FXAA, 2X anisotropic.

37 (f-act and f-sim), frame 0.027, cpu 0.024, gpu 0.028

2. 8X SSAA+FXAA, 16X anisotropic

11.63 f-act, 19.90 f-sim, frame 0.088, cpu 0.060, gpu 0.099

Will try some more later with full-screen on. Note that the above is in "Windowed mode", and the display is a 5k (whatever that means for performance).

Also- the PC handles the higher SSAA/FXAA settting above with no visible effect on frames, the Mac is jerky at the higher settings but reasonably smooth with the lower settings.

Thanks, Bruce.

5k i think is the pixel.

This could be GPU. Try full screen.

Can you post your Rendering page screen shot ? So even other mac users can help.
