January 12, 201511 yr Just couple quick comments for anyone who is also interested at flying P3D on a 4K TV. Just set up a Seiki 65" 4K I bought from Amazon for $1000 couple weeks ago. The Seiki is cheap and the 4K resolution is real (3840x2160) and great. However it can only do 4K at 30Hz max and the color is mediocre - I would guess it's probably a 6bit panel although overall good enough. The LG 50" 1080p plasma replaced by this Seiki definitely has much better color quality. Only had couple hours with P3D on it so far. I was already running P3D at 4K resolution for 4x DSR at 1080p, so the performance hit by upgrading to 4K was not obvious to me. However, AA becomes quite tricky with 4K. 4x DSR gives me the best transparency AA results on 1080p screen with no performance hit of SGSSAA. At 4K, out of habit I first tried 4x DSR which effectively runs P3D at the insane 8K resolution of 7680x4320. Well, I got busted every time - right after processing scenery P3D just quit with out of memory error. I could do 2.25x DSR, but it actually makes screen looks worse - kind of uzzy and water-colored. I feel 4K screen is much more demanding on the quality of DSR and 2.25x just does cut. Maybe one day 4xDSR on 8GB video card/64bit P3D will do. I then tried 2x SGSSAA but the performance hit under heavy clouds (generated by ASN) is huge. Finally, I kind of "discovered" that at 4K resolution I can get away by having 4x MSAA only. The scenery is almost perfectly fine without transparency AA. The shimmering is minimal, actually much better than 1080p with 2x/4x SGSSAA. This is clearly a big benefit of doubling the screen resolution. Instrument panels are not as nice as 1080p with DSR or SGSSAA, but not too far behind. Considering there is no transparency AA at all, I'm quite happy that 4K resolution paid off so much on eliminating the need for heavy AA. For some reason I got more stutters on Seiki panel. Don't know if it's really due to 4K resolution or sth else. Need to fly more to tell. One thing for sure, locked 30fps on 4K 30Hz screen is silk smooth so 30Hz refresh rate is clearly not a problem. Overall I'm pretty happy with this "cheap" 4K upgrade, not as good as I thought, but still a big leap visually from 1080p (of course 65" size also easily beats 50"). One last thing I need to do it's to tweak Rob's HDR setting. The color and contrast a bit too much washed out on this LCD screen. 9950X3D / 64GB / RTX5090 / Pimax Crystal Light / Win11
January 12, 201511 yr Thanks for this helpful information. I am seriously considering moving to 4k but in addition to P3D and XPX I play many other games including AAA titles. I still have not seen any reports of users with one of the 4k g-sync monitors and P3D as 4k g-sync has really received great reviews from the gaming community. Several of the gamers that I follow on Twitch and Youtube have reported that 30 or 40 FPS with g-sync feels like 60 fps. Maybe I can be the guinea pig with regards to P3D and 4k g-sync but I wanted to wait for prices to drop a little further this year. I also wanted to wait for nvidia to release a P3D profile which reportedly is in the works. Ryan
January 12, 201511 yr Author Interesting. Does P3D support G-sync too? I thought because P3D uses pseudo fullscreen mode, G-sync doesn't work for P3D. It'll be great if it does. I'm pretty sure the Seiki has no G-sync. It's a TV overall... 9950X3D / 64GB / RTX5090 / Pimax Crystal Light / Win11
January 12, 201511 yr Interesting. Does P3D support G-sync too? That's a great question that I really can't find an answer to. Maybe it can be forced through NI until nvidia releases a profile for P3D? Ryan
January 12, 201511 yr Apparently, in order to get 4:4:4 color, you have to have a 4K HDTV that for sure supports it (not many yet) AND a HDMI 2.0 cable from the nv980 PC=9700K@5Ghz+RTX2070 VR=HP Reverb| Software = Windows 10 | Flight SIms = P3D, CAP2, DCS World, IL-2, Aerofly FS2
January 12, 201511 yr Author My card is GTX 980, but Seiki only has HDMI v1.4 so it tops at 30Hz at 4K. One reason I decided to buy cheap Seiki is b/c apparently many of those more expensive 4K models from Samsung, SONY etc can only do 4K at 60Hz at 4:2:0. It's difficult to tell which particular model can do 4:4:4 4K at 60Hz. So I decided to pull the trigger on Seiki first, then wait couple years until the 4K market sorts out this bandwidth/HDMI 2.0 issue. I guess then I just sell the Seiki to recover some money. 9950X3D / 64GB / RTX5090 / Pimax Crystal Light / Win11
January 12, 201511 yr Commercial Member Yeah I bought an LG that turns out it did 4k 4,4,4 colour at only 30hz and would do 4k 4,2,0 colour at 60hz which ment the desktop didn't display properly. Changed it for one than does everything at 60hz now. Not many do it yet as you said. January 14, 201511 yr Which one doez 4,4,4 at 60? PC=9700K@5Ghz+RTX2070 VR=HP Reverb| Software = Windows 10 | Flight SIms = P3D, CAP2, DCS World, IL-2, Aerofly FS2
January 15, 201511 yr Commercial Member I've got a 49ub850v, they also do a 55" version although I can't confirm if that one does it. Chris Owner, Fulcrum Simulator Controls. fulcrumsim.com facebook.com/fulcrumsimulatorcontrols instagram.com/fulcrumsimulatorcontrols twitter.com/Fulcrum_SC
