FSX DX10 Shots Using New Nvidia 258.50 Update

Featured Replies

Thank you Richard.

New life to ole' FSX DX10!

Beautiful shots Jim. I was just wondering if you notice much of an fps drop in 'borderless' mode? Also would any of you guys know if is it possible to use 'panel-restore' (not that this has ever worked for me!) in 'borderless' mode. It would be a dream not to have to set-up all my panels on a second screen after a crash or when starting a new flight.

Thanks in advance.

No, I haven't seen a loss in FPS with using FSX Borderless. Started using window borderless instead of full screen mode and almost instantly started getting much better shadow AA. Sharp and clear! There sure are a lot of folks who put a great deal of work into making our graphics the best they can be. Something I surely appreciate! FSX has never looked better as it does with a bit of tweaking.

I don't know about "panel-restore" using borderless, though.

Thanks again for the comments, Paul.

Cheers for the reply Jim,

I've just applied your NV Insepctor and DX10 changes and downloaded 'borderless mode'. Now I know it doesn't neccessarily make sense to use the same settings as yours, but I thought I may as well start somewhere and tweak based on performance.

I'm going to try my first flight in a Carenado 172 Skyhawk II, so I won't be surprised if my system is brought to it's knees before too long. Carenado HD panels have done that to me without using any DX10 Shadow settings. So wish me luck!

BTW, I presume you use the 'forceVCShadow' tweak as well.

Anyway, thanks for the inspiration, and I'll post any screen shots if they come up to scratch!

Thanks again Jim,

Hello, Paul,

I sure hope these settings work great for your system. Since every PC build is comprised of different components, the settings might need to be changed to suit your build.

But!  The settings I posted are working GREAT with my system! Smooth, 30FPS average, and almost no jaggies. My CFG reflects the companion element to both Steve's DX10 Fixer and NVI settings.

I did insert the "forceVCShadow' tweak also.

Most of the aircraft I fly in FSX are from A2A, Carenado, Captain Sim, Project OpenSkyk, and TDS with very satisfactory results. They are FPS intensive, but, they sure look great and fly beautifully.

Paul, good luck and hope it works as good for you as it does for me. As previously stated, if I change one setting that you see in NVI, the results are unsatisfactory for me. Looking forward to seeing your shots!

Unfortunately I could not get the ''borderless mode' to work. Downloaded it from the library here, copied the .exe file to my FSX directory and made a shortcut to my desktop. I tried launching it with FSX with the .exe, and it launched fine, but after that it behaved just as it normally does. I also started FSX normally and then clicked the .exe and just found that my windowed mode screen got stuck between my two monitors! There are a number of similar programs in the library, so if you wouldn't mind Jim, could you post me the link to the one you are using.

Asides from that little hiccup, all the new settings ran beautifully in the Carenado Skylake and the Milviz Cessna 310, until I arrived over London! Now, I should mention I have all the Orbx scenery components, including FTX England and Ireland as well as Mega Heathrow and Mega Dublin in addition to REX 4 with everything at it's highest resolution,

so it was no surprise when things started to chug. I find TrackIR definitively takes it's toll on FPS as well, but I couldn't fly without it.

But in the English countryside, everything ran smooth as butter at a constant 30fps. For me, Steve's DirectX 10 fixer is the reason I really began to take a serious interest in FSX about 6 months ago; of course I've had CTDs since buying it, but never a single OOM. This was my first time tinkering with the shadow settings, and while I did notice the extra depth it gave the VC, I'm still such a newbie that I'm usually desperately trying to keep everything on course, I rarely have a chance to enjoy it. I definitely noticed a serious reduction in jaggies with the higher anti aliasing settings, and that was my biggest surprise of the night, I really didn't notice a performance hit with them at all.! So thanks for that Jim, that's a major plus!

I think you are running the one monitor according to your NI settings- I was just wondering what size and resolution it is. I've only got 2 24" monitors and I find especially with TrackIR that my VC is just too cramped. Sorry for going off topic, but I was just curious about that.

I hope to upgrade to a 32" for my VC in the next couple of months.

So, thanks very much with sharing your tips and settings with everyone Jim! I certainly benefited, and it made me appreciate DX10 Fixer all the more, as well as eager to experiment with some of its other settings.

All the best Jim,

P.S. None of my screenshots could hold a candle to your exceptional shots. Give me a couple of weeks though and focusing on getting that perfect shot and I'd love to share some with you. Maybe from A2A's Spitfire...to complement your Mustang!

Hi, Paul,

Here is the link to FSX P3D Borderless:   http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/topic/9008-fsx-or-p3d-borderless-in-windowed-mode/

This is a great program and works exceedingly well. I haven't used a multi-monitor setup. But, as you can see in the link above, it will explain the very simple steps needed using FSX Borderless with a multi-monitor environment.

With 3rd party airports and a lot of ORBX scenery, my system can get taxed at major cities, but rarely do the FPS drop much below 15 FPS. In FSX, all of the sliders are maxed, except:

Water Effects - Hight 2x
Scenery Complexity - Dense
Autogen - Normal
Special Effects - Medium
Cloud Draw Distance - 70NM
Rate at which weather changes over distance - No Change

With REX 4, I'm using 1024 for the clouds, DXT5 for Clouds and DXT1 for Water. 2048 and 4096 settings take a toll on FPS. But, produce some incredible views!

My poor TrackIR is sitting on a shelf, looking at me with a forlorn look, gathering dust. Need to put it back into use, as I love what it does for "realism".

Currently, I'm using a Panasonic 50" 1080P 600HZ Plasma screen for my monitor. I 'upgraded' from a 27.5" Samsung LCD monitor, and haven't looked back. The Plasma produces an outstanding sharp color saturated output.

As for the shadow settings in Steve's DX10 Fixer, it takes adjusting until you are satisfied with the results. Steve really does a great service to FSX!

Paul, great to hear that you benefited from these settings! It is the difference between night and day in visuals. Just the near total elimination of jaggies alone, both externally as well as with shadows, was worth the minor hit on FPS. Not to forget to mention what Nvidia delivered with the 358.50 driver update.

Looking forward to seeing your screenshots, especially of the incomparable Spitfire! She is a work of art ... made all the better by A2A!

This is from last evening at KHQM with real time weather:

Another beautiful capture Jim. I'm sue the plasma's famous deep, inky blacks must enhance those shadows all the more. And it must look spectacular on a 58" screen. I know a 32" inch 1440 VC will give me a level of immersiveness that I just feel is missing. I've also got a set of MFG Crosswind pedals due to be ready sometime next month. That's gonna be some change from using a separate joystick's z axis for rudder along with the usual Saitek pro throttle and quadrant. As you can see, I've embraced this hobby like no other, and in less than a year I've become a total obsessive!

I'm going to have to dial down some of my settings for sure, although I sure do love the extreme right settings for scenery complexity and autogen. I really hope Dovetail produce a sequel that will take full advantage of our multi-threaded four, six or even eight cores, our 16GB of DDR3 Ram and our high-end graphics cards. I have the excuse of using my PC for some 3D rendering and Photoshop, which is amazingly fast on an SSD. I fear though, all of our existing add-ons will be obsolete. In terms of scenery that wouldn't really matter, because the default visuals would probably blow us away. It's my aircraft hangar (well most of it anyway) that I'd miss. I still think it would be worth it though.

Until then, us tinkerers are gonna keep a tinkering!

I promise some nice shots of a Spitfire within the next couple of weeks. Unfortunately I've a busy period coming up, and I'll have to take off my headphones and mic for a xweek or two. I don't know if you've tried any of FS2Crew's add-ons, but once you train Microsoft to recognise your voice, it's great having a first officer and an engineer to order around! It's also the only way I can manage the more complex airliners, the overhead panels alone take up my entire second monitor! And trying to find the FSUIPC control or offset to just switch the ignition on has driven me very close to just sticking to my single and twin-prop classics. Especially the WWII era ones. So fun to fly and you get to enjoy the scenery as well!

Good talking as always Jim!

Hi, Paul,

Thank you again. It was only with the newest Nvidia 358.50 driver update that a lot of what I have been messing with for years just fell into place. Admitting ignorance, I don't know what Nvidia did, but, I hope they don't change it! Using settings that some outstanding folks have shared, finding the settings that work with my system, and using Nvidia's newest update has been time well spent.

The Plasma produces some very nice color balance, contrast, and saturation. I'm running the recommended 'photography' setting to enhance the scene in the Display settings. The 32" 1440 VC WILL NOT be a let down and is definitely the way to go! The whole point of the monitor is to produce a view that looks real enough to cause a sweat to break out on a tough wind-driven (which your new MFG Crosswind pedals will come in handy) down to minimums approach with an engine fire and down to just the standby instruments. And, not realize that a sweat had broken out until the aircraft is parked and dark. Now.....THAT'S FUN!

Even with the way FSX utilizes what it does in the way of Ram, cores, and graphics cards, this is the first time since FSX came out that I actually do like the end results. It has been years of tweaking and hardware changes that finally have come together for me. Nvidia rounded out the equation with their last update! It's almost like I can say that I have finally learned how to walk and chew gum at the same time!

FSX has a way of grabbing hold of a person and not letting them go. As you have found out. Much the same, albeit without the expenditure required, with the Need For Speed series. Especially Rivals! I break out into a sweat and get the hee-bee-gee-bees if I can't race at least a couple of hours a week. The graphics are absolutely breathtaking in Rivals! I'll crash or get taken out while watching the dust blow across the road or how the sunlight passes along the windshield in a turn! Now, if we could only get those graphics into FSX. It might require pushing the ole' AMD FX-8350 to 8GHz and use liquid nitro-pluto-monium for CPU cooling! If Dovetail or Lockheed could do that.......!

Currently, the only audible in use is an outstanding FSUIPC LUA verbal checklist module. Well, and the built-in FSX ATC, using mods from EditVoicePack X. Its great to set up FAA communications in the U.S. and ICAO communications outside of the U.S.

Looking forward to your screenies Paul!

Cheers,

Jim

rlgoodson, this is great to hear!

Without having to look at all of the jaggies, it makes FSX so much more enjoyable.

Thank you for your response.
