Trying to get smooth gameplay from new high-end PC for FSX?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I've just bought a new Chillblast gaming PC for use with Flight Simulator X Steam Edition.

I have the PMDG 737-800/900 Package installed right now and I just want to get the smoothest gameplay possible with my hardware.

My Hardware is as follows:

Intel Core i7 4790k running at 4.0 Ghz

16GB Corsair Vengeance RAM

Nvidia Geforce GTX 980 GPU

1 SSD for Windows 10 Pro OS

FSX Running from 4TB SSHD Drive

Below is my current fsx.cfg File if this helps :) I'm basically wanting to get the very best performance from my hardware, smoothest gameplay etc... any advice would be great as I'm not 100% in the know yet about how to tweak the CFG correctly etc...

Just a cursory look at your cfg reveals the following:

You have a number of additions to the cfg that really aren't needed. I'd rebuild the cfg and just keep it simple... your hardware is strong, and tweaking the cfg file will do little if anything for you.

Your freeway traffic is way too high. Try lowering it to 10-15 at the most.

Your affinity mask is peculiar... running the sim on one CPU Core and two Virtual Cores. I'd change this to 252 (3 CPU Cores and 3 Virtual Cores).

Think about overclocking your system. You should be able to easily hit 4.4GHz, and with a bit of study and work a 4.8 overclock is possible.

Finally, your system is perfect for DX10... think about buying Steve's DX10 Fixer and turning loose the true force of your system and DX10.

HTH and Good Luck,

Greg

The 4790K does 4.4 on it's own right out of the box. 4.6-48 as meager an OC as it is shouldn't be too hard to get. Another idea is to turn down the settings a bit and then slowly adjust them up depending on your performance and expectations.

Agree 100%. Turn down the traffic I have this at 5% up to 10% MAX. 50% would be a huge FPS hit.

Another big one is the "airport scenery density" this should be on low any more causes a big FPS hit where its most demanding already, the airports.

IF you have good cooling and feel comfortable adjusting your BIOS then yes overclock it, you should be able to hit 4.5-4.6 with out much added voltage.

Last set your FPS to 30 in FSX and 1/2 refresh in nvidia control panel. If its not able to maintain 30fps adjust the scenery down a little more till it is. You will now have very SMOOTH flight.

I've found, some time ago, that running with no frame rate lock whatsoever results in a significant increase in frame rate. I don't get any stuttering either.

Seems to be system specific, some can do this and some cant, but worth experimenting.

This is a good suggestion. By the way, this can even be specific to how you have your flight configured. Sometimes I am seeing a fast dip from 35 fps to 18 fps on unlimited. I then lock a frame rate at around 30 and don't see stutters. Sometimes I leave it at unlimited and get smoother flight. Worth experimenting sometimes even based on your flight scenario.

Thanks guys for the advice! I'm getting really good performance out of the sim now, I'm actually considering moving to P3D when I've educated myself a bit more on it etc... thanks again everyone! :)
