Best option is to refaormat and reinstall Windows and all new software when upgrading a rig. However... twice in the past, I have done exactly as you suggest. First thing to do is to uninstall all of the old software that relates to your old motherboard, chipset drivers, etc. Also any graphics card drivers relating to old graphics card, or any old component that won't be installed in your new system. That way you avoids any possible conflicts. I've done this twice in the past with no issues. As I said though, best practice is to reformat and reinstall.
