Glide slope indicator

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to do some training for my instrument rating.  I own a Maule M7 and have a GTN 650 installed.  I am using Prepard3DV3 and I have also installed the Flight1 GTN 650, the problem is that the default Maule does not have a glideslope indicator in it.  Is there a way of replacing the VOR head that runs off Nav2 with a glideslope indicator?  Or a indicator that isn't in the panel would be okay as well.

Thanks

Not sure about P3D, but the Maule that comes with FSX has an HSI in the panel..

and it is replaceable

In the panel.cfg file:

[VCockpit01]
.....
gauge11=Maule_M7_260C!hsi,                  261, 2, 128, 125

Is yours different?

Looking at the FSX code, it may be using a different glideslope variable

than the GTN expects.. but that is fixable.

In FSX, I might try:

gauge11=Beech_Baron!Horizontal Situation Indicator,  261, 2, 128, 125

And while you are at it, make sure the pixel size in both Vcockpit sections is:

pixel_size=1024,1024

Send me a PM with your email address if you need help with this.

The Beech Baron in Prepard3D has a HSI and what appears to be a NDB (i dont remember).  However the HSI is just that, no glide slope.

I made some progress.  I was able to take the glide slope out of the Caranado 208 and place it in the Maule panel.  However this glide slope was operated from Nav 2 and is called VOR2.  I replaced the HSI in the Maule panel with this so i figured that it would operate from Nav1 but that is not he case.  it is slaved to Nav2.  There is more then changing the name of the gage to VOR from VOR2 as I found out.  How do i get NAV1 to operate this?

The VOR gauge would definitely be coded to work with either NAV1 or NAV2. Are you sure you're not missing the GS indicators? You're not looking for a needle, you're looking for these two little yellow pointers:

Try removing the GTN from the Maule and fly an ILS approach.

I am sure the HSI will show the glideslope indicators pictured above.

The Baron HSI is actually higher resolution, so replacing the HSI with the Baron's, or Carenado 208's

may be a good move, regardless.   (Also pixel size 1024,1024!)

This should prove that the HSI works, glideslope and all.

The remaining question is why the GTN does not drive the glideslope.. does it work OK in other airplanes?

Some users have problems with the latest 1.12 GTN release, so it is possible that it is the culprit,

if it does not work in other airplanes either.  In that case, the upcoming 1.13 release may well fix it.

The VOR gauge is coded to use NAV1 or NAV2.  You would have to change the gauge code... however, the Baron HSI, or Carenado 208 HSI may well do the job for you.. they would track NAV1.

No, I am using Prepard3dV3 and neither the Maule or the Beech has a GS.  How do I reprogram Nav2 to Nav1?

Have sent you a PM.

I just checked the Beech Baron and it indeed has glideslope indicators build into it's HSI. They are yellow triangles that move vertically on either side of the HSI.

I also checked the Maule and it too has a glideslope indicator. They are also yellow triangles that move vertically on either side of the HSI.

The P3DV3 Maule and Baron HSIs definitely DO have a glideslope.

You do realize that in both the real and simulated HSI, the glideslope pointers (yellow triangles) are only visible when an ILS with a valid glideslope is actually being received?

When the Nav radio is not tuned to an ILS frequency, or when the aircraft is not in a position to receive the glideslope signal, the pointers retract fully upwards and disappear from view.

The stock FSX Bendix-King 525 HSI used in the Baron and Maule does have a glideslope indicator, but the NAV1 radio must be tuned to the ILS frequency and the NAV/GPS switch must be set to NAV in order for glideslope indicator to work.

GTN v1.13 released yesterday fixes "the glideslope not working under certain configurations", maybe that's the problem?

glideslope not working thread:

Still should have had a GS when tuned to an ILS though...

Maybe I'm crazy.  When doing a RNAV (LNAV+V) into KDYL (my home airport in the real world) in the PD3 Maule, and using the Flight 1 GTN650 set to Com1/Nav1.  I get lateral guidance but there is absolutely no yellow tabs indicating vertical guidance.  So frustrating.  I haven't tried a ILS to see if I get vertical guidance on those approaches.
