Flight1 TextoMatic_Setup intercepted as Trojan Horse!

Featured Replies

Hello.I just fired up my computer a few moments ago and AVG antivirus intercepted a a virus listed as Trojan horse Downloader.Agent.XS. :(I moved it to my virus vault and the path is listed as:E:Flight Simulator 9Flight One SoftwareTextoMatic_Setup.exeDoes this mean this file is a trojan horse or has been infected by a trojan horse?Has anyone else using AVG had this intercept happen?I just updated my virus definition files for AVG earlier today.Just curious.Scott :-eek

OK, I'm doing a complete scan of my system right now and ALL of my my setup files in the C:Flight 1 Software directory are being flaged as Trojan Horse download agents! This seems very strange, since I just ran a virus scan two days ago and nothing like this showed up.Scott :-hmmm

same thing happened to me only the files were flagged by Spy Sweeper. I have three install files from Flight 1 and they were grabbed.

i have flight 1, but i aint got no virus scan

I got the same thing when I opened "Add/Remove Programs". I've made them aware with a post to their forums. It's obviously an error.

Several years ago anti-virus companies tested their pattern recognition files against many programs to ensure there were no false virus warnings. The world has become a much more dangerous place and most companies put out updated virus definitions very quickly with only one or two samples of a possible virus. And without very much testing.Symantec releases beta definition files four times EVERY DAY. My company downloads them and distributes them to our quarter million computers world wide four times a day.We see false positives every day - but we also stop some viruses very early - most of our effort is focused on our e-mail gateways. If you have a virus warning - quarantine the file. Write down the information on the virus and go to your AV software site - research the suspected virus. If it is a new virus - update your virus definitions tomorrow and have it rescan the files.Another good idea is to use an online freeware virus checker from a different company - to see if it has the same warning.Another thing you can do is change your account rights on your computer to a regular user account - yet grant full control of the Flight Sim folder to that account. That way you can run Flight Simulator without being an administrator on your coumputer. It is really a bad idea to be on the internet while logged onto your computer with the local administrator account. This measure will stop most of the viruses and an amazingly large percentage of spyware / adware from getting on your computer. This will prevent any virus or spyware/adware from modifying your system folder or other program folders. You must have Windows 2000 or Windows XP to setup your account this way and have NTFS file system.I seriously doubt that a virus would attack / attach itself to those files - they are too obscure and too few computers have them. But one potential problem is that viruses include segments of code from legitimate computer programs to make it harder for the A.V software to recognize the virus.I might also mention - and it is not a criticism just an observation - that AVG seems to have two or three incidents of large false positive reports each month. Perhaps they are more agressive in their definition releases than some others.

I have the same program.Trojan Horse of same variey (XS Ithink) detected on those Flight1 files by AVG, Spy sweeper, and Adaware plus.Did full AVG scan and found bout 40 instances of trojan horses on Flight1 stuff.Luckily it managed to get rid of all of them.I wonder is as Flight 1 says it is an error by AVG. Why ist this replicated on Spysweeper and Adaware, ?Edmundo Cardenas

Ad-aware does not find viruses to my knowledge. What did Spy Sweeper report - since it also does not find viruses to my knowledge?Anti-virus software works on pattern recognition - it does not find real viruses - it scans the code of files and when a section of code matches a section of code in the anti-virus definitions - it flags the file as a possible virus.Adware and spyware detection works on the same principle. The problem is that quite a bit of code is common in many different programs. Maybe only 2 or 3 percent of the code in a virus file is the acutal virus - trojan to hijack your computer can take less than 100 bytes of code. All the rest of the code in the virus file is camoflague thrown in to make it harder to find the real virus code.ALL of the anti-virus companies share what they find with each other. I'm not sure about the sharing of adware / spyware recognition patterns but it appears many of the freeware folks use the same source files to recognize viruses and spyware/adware. That can lead to several different programs finding the same file report. What is the specific virus reported and what does the AVG website virus Dictionary say about the virus?Yes - several times a year there will be thousands of reports of a virus in a commercial software program - and they are almost always false. The AVG site FAQ is very clear "Please check the virus Encyclopedia web page and search for the exact name of virus mentioned in the test result." before deleting a file or program which has run on your computer successfully and passed previous AV scans."Please run AVG program (basic or advanced interface) and choose Test Results from Results menu (you can also use F6 key to get the same). Now you can see the list of finished tests, double click the latest one (by date) and you will get the full list of detected viruses (if there were any), including the path, the name and status of infected object. When it is opened, go back to mail AVG program screen -> Programmenu -> Export... item (or you can user Ctrl+S shortcut to get Save as... option). Please send us this file for further analysis."

sounds like too much work... Get a Mac!heh,Scott

Until they do so, I'm doing nothing.EDIT: New AVG update received this morning. Now no virus warning. As I said, it was bound to be an AVG error. I couldn't really see Flight 1 having the problem. We'd be more likely to see FS10 released in September!:-)

I got the same message yesterday with the same file. How odd! virus warning for Textomatic with AVG Pro!CheersTim>Hello.>>I just fired up my computer a few moments ago and AVG>antivirus intercepted a a virus listed as Trojan horse>Downloader.Agent.XS. :(>>I moved it to my virus vault and the path is listed as:>E:Flight Simulator 9Flight One>SoftwareTextoMatic_Setup.exe>>Does this mean this file is a trojan horse or has been>infected by a trojan horse?>>Has anyone else using AVG had this intercept happen?>>I just updated my virus definition files for AVG earlier>today.>>Just curious.>>Scott :-eekhttp://members.chello.nl/t.westnutt/realair.gif

I don't use freeware Anti virus or firewalls, I use Trend Micro Pc-Cillin which blocks everything, and I never get a false positive. They send updates some times 2X a day. It's not free, but for the money I have invested in my PC, the small cost per year, is certainly worth it.

Those are all false positives. This happens sometimes. The best thing to do is when this happens, contact the company producing the scanner, and let them know. This helps them because there could be a good chance the scanner is causing problems with other applications from other companies out there. Also, the worst thing that could occur is that yours or other peoples applications could get broken and it could force you to have to do full reinstalls of everything affected. For a while, once scanner broke certain flight data files with Ultimate Traffic, and users had to reinstall with their scanner disabled.I just double checked TextoMatic_Setup.exe and it was clean!

Thanks,

Well, I suspect that the latest virus definitions flagged the Flight 1 setup routines as virus's are false positives. However, I went ahead and alowed AVG to remove these files (just to be safe) since they are not required for the installed aircraft & scenery to run. I also have backup copies of these programs burned to CD anyways.Still, it is a bit scary to get the virus warning poping up in your face when the computer is turned on.Scott :-samurai

I also got the same with AVG this morning! It must be a wrong alert in this case.
