Update of magnetic variation and navaids not effective

Featured Replies

Hello!

I have upgraded my Prepar3d v3 simulator by installing the following Orbx products: FTX Global Base, FTX Global Vector and FTX Global openLC Europe.

I am trying to update the files containing the magnetic variation and the navaids in Prepar3d, by applying the following: http://www.aero.sors.fr/navaids3.html

A very short test showed that the effects are not visible: runways 15/33 from LRIA should have become 14/32, the runways should have had PAPI lights etc.

The scenery contained in the FTX products has greater priority in the Scenery Library, and the navaids update is applied only to the stock files of the simulator.

Do I have any chance of using the navaids update together with the Orbx products? If yes, how?

If not, how do you guys manage to fly on VATSIM, for example, where (I understand) the ATC controllers give instructions based on updated scenery and navaids?

Thanks in advance!

Marian,

The navaids update will only update stock VORs, NDBs and some ILS. It has nothing to do with airport AFCADs and certainly will only change specific PAPIs or runway identifiers within the BGL file. Just read the information on the web site and PDF documentation carefully. Addon airports will not be affected by the update.

The navaids update will work with or without ORBX FTX products as the later only improve textures (Global), landclasses (openLC) or vector data (Vector). Nothing to do with navaids. If you follow the manual and apply the software you will see whether the update was run successfuly.

Regards,

Chris

Hi Marian and Chris,

Just to clarify

For Western Europe, "navaids" update also correct (in addition to VOR, NDBs and ILSs) all runway identifiers, PAPIs, runway & approach lighting systems as stated in the documentation (1st page, 1st paragraph). I suspect FTX Global openLC Europe includes its own airport updates and not only landclasses (to be confirmed). Consequently, with a higher priority over stock BGL files, there's no chance provided changes to stock files could be active, likely the reason why you didn't see any change in LRIA runway identifiers (that are indeed included in the changes I performed since it has been published)..unless you didn't correctly install the navaids update and/or check the "Do not update airport files"

A few months ago I applied the same update and it worked. And now I remember why: I made a few small adjustments to the parking spots, using AFX. But the application could not load the Orbx scenery file, I don't remember what the error message was. So I loaded the stock one. Because of these changes, the new airport scenery got the highest priority. So I had the updated runway numbers, PAPI lights etc.

So it seems that I can use either the navaids update, or the Orbx products... I don't see another solution for the moment... I'll have to use only old charts that are compatible with the old Prepar3d navaids, while flying GA aircraft that use them and don't have their own navdata in the FMC.

Thank you for the answers!

I have exactly the same ORBX products as you, and I also use the navaids updates from Hervé Sors, and they work just fine. It does not matter that the ORBX products are at a higher scenery priority than the "stock" FSX/P3D navaids files - the ORBX products you mentioned do NOT contain navaid data - nor do they contain mag var data, so they do not interfere in any way.

The only issues you might have would be with custom ORBX airports, which might overwrite the stock ILS data, just as any add-on airport might.

Hmm... interesting!

I will definitely take another look at this and try reinstalling the update. Fortunately, I have .gho images of the partitions on my simulator system, so it's easy to make another test with "untouched" scenery/navaids.

Thank you!

You were right, the navaids do get updated. The only things that do not get updated are the PAPI lights (they don't show up if they've been added), the runway numbers, basically all that has to do with the scenery.

It should be so there is definitely another "airport scenery" that prevents a proper display of the modified airport, as shown below on my sim (I only have Orbx FTX Global Base installed) and/or you checked  the "Do not update airport files" option.

LRIA is a strange one. i worked on making an updated afcad for it a year or two ago and all of my changes (added bulidings, etc) were showing up some 200m away from where they were positioned in the afcad, it was kind of weird and i never did find a solution other than trying to position them incorrectly, so that the offset was taken into account ...which was a hassle and basically i gave up on it because i was too busy with other stuff.

it's further complicated by the fact that there is a new runway, the 14/32 isn't just a change due to updated magnetic heading, it is actually offset from the original one which is now a taxiway, i understand it was operational in 2014 and completed just recently in nov 2015, it is recent enough construction that you can't see it on bing or google maps either.

this picture from wikipedia is slightly old too, according to the current charts the new runway extends another few hundred meters to the northwest now..

i'd love to see an update, maybe i will take another shot at it once some satellite pics get updated. the scenery section on romanian ivao doesn't seem to be working but i got some decent afcads for LROP there a while back.

cheers

I did not check the "Do not update airport files" option. The reason those changes do not appear is the scenery contained in FTX Global openLC Europe which I also have installed. So, actually, the behaviour is correct and as expected.

Now I need an updated scenery too. Either purchased (when it becomes available), or maybe I'll get my hands dirty and begin playing with ADE.  :Nerd:
