First install of P3Dv3

Featured Replies

hello, just installed p3dv3 today on my new rig.

launched it once.

tried to install FSUIPC, but it's not showing (no addon menu).

then I remembered to use right click -> admin rights, and relaunch FSUIPC install executable this way, still no addon menu.

What did I missed ?

Do i need to install Simconnect from P3D\redist\Interface\ESPv1 ??

Do i need to install the SDK that is available to download when purchaising P3D ??

Can't find a dam** beginners guide on the web, if someone know one, i really would like to read it (haven't been simming since years, and it was on FS9)

thanks.

Kenz

Do you have the latest FSUIPC-version?

Strange. Should install straight away with no fuzz...

Best to let Pete see the install log from FSUIPC - he'll be able to sort it out pretty quickly.

Thanks for clearing that up. I thought P3D installed SimConnect.

This is quite a common problem with P3D on new copies of Windows that have not previously had FSX installed, since there's no legacy simconnect versions installed on the machine.

P3D only installs simconnect 1.0.20.0.

If we intend to use addons that use FSX simconnect versions, then we must install the 3 simconnect versions from \redist, 60905, 61242, and 61259. Otherwise there will be addons not working, and even various CTDs.

Also before installing addons, right-click, properties, on the P3D program files folder and in the security tab add Modify permission for the Users group.

Afaik LM stopped P3D from installing SimConnect starting with v3: now you always will have to install it manually. If you need all versions of SimConnect depends on what add ons you use. I only need it for TrackIR and A2A aircraft and I only install SimConnect SP2.

And the right-click properties tip is only used when you installed P3D into the default Program Files folder. I always install P3D in the root of another drive (like D:\Prepar3D v3\) and never have to fool around with permissions.

Thanks for the tips. I'm really looking for tips like that, cause I'm coming to p3dv3 directly from fs9. Trying to do it in the cleanest way i can.

So far :

P3dv3 (in it's own folder on it's own drive, admin rights set)

Simconnects

Fsuipc

Navdata update from aerosors

Next item :

Ezdok

Ivap

Some sceneries (freeware from fsx and some payeware)

Pmdg ngx

I you have links with guides to share that would be awesome, this way i won't make mistakes when installing (i already found the guides for ezdok and ivao, hope this will work flawlessly)

Thanks for your help and advices guys !

I would stick with my two recommendations shown above and not worry about installing an addon and not knowing which version of simconnect it requires, and always add the Modify permission to a user created folder you intend to install software into, problems down the road can come from changes in the Windows user profile.

Thanks Steve and JvE. Great to know when I move over to my new computer.

For what it's worth, installing any number of versions of simconnect on to a system adds nothing to the burden of the software. Problems requiring simconnect be de-installed is a myth. The software is in Windows and in P3D, these simconnect .msi files are mostly like setup files. If a problem is encountered with a version of simconnect, the simconnect should not be uninstalled. Instead this would indicate that an offending program using that version of simconnect should be investigated. Set and forget, install P3D, install the three .msi's, and set the permission. Takes no time and there's no more to worry about.

It's useful to understand why the permissions issue arose in the first place, since many are bemused when they are told they should install into another folder or drive.

First I would say it's worth noting that when we log into Windows we become a member of the Users group.

Many addons appeared during Windows XP and with new versions of Windows, consequences led to requiring permission to write to the installed-to folder. I've been recommending the Modify permission tip since then. I'm sure everyone knows that installing onto a user created folder gets around the problem of that user not having write permission to program files. However, how many realise that the new folder is owned by the user that created it, even the Admins don't have permission to it. For some, problems crop up next week, but sure, for most, problems never occur.

Trashing the tip with comments like "fooling around with permissions" is hardly realistic, and leads to unreliable systems. In many other's opinion it's far easier to set the permission, (right-click properties, security, Edit, choose Users, check Modify, OK), than creating a folder, that's only 100% reliable if we add the permission for the Users group to it anyway. As far as other drives and folders are concerned, it can mean extra key pressing when installing addons, and it's also possible that some addons have problems installed outside of the default location, whether it be P3D or FSX. FSX-SE is another story.
