Sounds a lot like something is interfering, or you're not following the proper procedure for using the AP. Make sure the turn wheel is centered, and you flip the gyro pilot switch first, and then the mechanical disconnect.

Good find... there is a handy clickspot just in front of the turn knob that can be used to make sure the knob is centered.
