Video card (1080 ftw) glitch or software glitch (image)?

Recommended Posts

I swear the issue that that they idle the cards at 60c to keep the fans from being loud but I'd rather have a loud fan than a burnt up gpu,if our CPUS idle'd at 60c we'd all be really upset. I set a custom fan curve so that at 60c the fan goes to 100 percent and turns on at 30c,rarely does my card hit 60c now,and I cant even hear the fan over my h110

Thanks for the replies everyone.. i guess what i thought might have been an isolated "bad card" might just be temp or driver related.. its only happened once here too, but my temps were reaching 83ish on average (throttling at the 82 or 83 i guess).. this was on my old hardware i7-4930k at 4.4ghz noctua air cooled with the 15 series.. with the ftw evga 1080 (not overclocked on the video btw)..

Now i have just set up and very very briefly tested my new rig.. i7-6700k with the 1080.. but at stock levels.. using the h100i v2 as well.. i have it installed on the top portion of the v51 thermaltake in intake mode per the instructions.. i think the temps are good so far, but i have yet to overclock it..

Anyways.. in my brief fsmark07 old school test, the gpu now peaked at 67C, not 83, so clearly either the rig is doing better or the water cooling is helping.. ill keep an eye out for this anomaly and try to not the conditions that brought it on.

If it happens often, you have a problem. Otherwise it is just a glitch that could be the hardware, temps, software or anything else you can think of. I've seen it happen when the card is outputting a resolution the monitor cannot handle, etc.

Apologise for being OT here, but concerning my high temp readings I applied a custom fan profile (1:1) to my GTX 1080 with ASUS GPU Tweak 2, and the GPU temp dropped to 72 celsius in a PMDG flight. Little more noise from the fan but hey, -10 degrees.

Guess at this point that the default fan curve is way too conservative in terms of noise reduction.

The bbq at my place is canceled then. :-()

Happy flying !

Happened again with mine.. so far, only in two situations, though they are mostly what i'm testing..

This time again, paused screen on the fsxmark07 test (full ftx + gex + utx + rex).. i had the screen maximized over all 3 24" screens making it 5760x1080 (not surround mode).. i hit alt enter when it happened, checked the temps in gpuz.. it read 63C/ 1% gpu usage.. though i think p3d had froze after tabbing out or maybe at the moment of the glitch.

I also noticed a quick flash of similar pixels/distortion when using the oculus rift.. this has happened on two systems now.. my old 4930k build and now on the 6700k.. i did not get distortion flashes when using rift with the 980ti..

So at this point, even though others have reported this.. im thinking its a bad card and might need to return it and get another.. not sure if i should still get the same exact model or not though.. i guess this isnt limited to the evga 1080 ftw (as others here reported it on different card models/brands)

Are you running unlimited with VSync off? I have noticed a tendency for my two 980ti's to throw up the occasional artifact (not what you are seeing) in P3D while under heavy load and both cards are peaking at 100% usage. The solution for me is to employ VSync and that reduces usage of both cards to around 90% max. with no displayed artefacts. Temps don't seem to be the issue as my cards run around 70C Max.

interesting, yea vsync off for vr, but as of now in tuning things I have it off in 2D with unlimitted.. I'll have to try that at least on 2D

I also wonder if this glitch shows up in other Sims or games? I have done limited other games and Sims but haven't seen it, so maybe it's not the card just p3d pushing too hard

. i tried limiting the fps to 30.. hoping this would help with the glitches i saw in the goggles and on screen per some suggestions..

No help at all, still glitching with pixels all over the place in flashes at times.. checked gpu utilization both unlimited and with 30 set, wasnt at 99 for some reason like before, either way in my tests.

*One big thing, i saw the clock speed on the gpu wasnt going above 1733 or whatever the lower upper limit is.. the overclock SC value of around 2000 wasnt happening with p3d, it happens with 3dmark though..

I'm going to be swapping this 1080 ftw evga for the 1080 ftw hybrid water cooler version when it comes out, not sure what the eta is on that, either way i'll swap it for a replacement just to be safe since i'm within the window of change here.

I tried updating to the newest nvidia driver to see if the glitching, particularly in the goggles would stop.. they didnt.

Tomorrow the 1080 ftw hybrid water cooled arrives.. i will be testing to see how it behaves.

My card did it again last night. Second time since I got it 8 weeks ago. Using the latest Nvida drivers 372.90.   If I change from VC to Spot view then back if fixes it.

Same issue here. GTX 1080 Palit Gamerock Premium (factory overclocked). Windows 10 AU x64. Current drivers 372.90.

I don't think the problem with overheating. I have a custom fan control curve so temperature don't exceed 72-75C.

In other games with extremely high GPU workload (DeusEx MD on 4K resolution, for example) the problem is not seen so far.

I also noted that with previous driver the problem appeared more often.

I received the new 1080 ftw hybrid water cooled GPU the other day (model 08G-P4-6288-KR).  It arrives in a box labelled 1080 GTX which was alarming at first.  Basically nowhere on the card or box does it actually say 1080 ftw hybrid, just 1080 gtx hybrid.  Model numbers matched, so did the clocks when it was running, so i think it must be just a marketing thing.

Ran a 3dmark test.. at 4.7 on my 6700k it hits 5599 or so.. during the test my gpu didnt exceed 50c at 100% gpu load (and about 60c on my cpu, which runs at 1.424-1.44 max under load with the thermaltake 3.0 riing 360cm.. more results of that testing here)

Then ran p3d in 2d mode.. at 97% gpu use it was around 43c (68c cpu at max of 1.424v).. compared to around 80C with the standard 1080 ftw..which is astounding.

VR:  So to test the glitch i ran a saved flight that generated the effect before.. same thing again, though less frequent.  Its strange that some people who have a different brand water cooled 1080 dont experience this issue, while others do.. i get it more in VR than 2D though, with the latests flyinsidefsx for p3d.  Since it doesnt seem to occur for others in other regular games, i'm not too concerned.
