*P3D* FSUIPC DynamicFriction.lua + PMDG 777

Hello fellow 777 pilots (devs):

This has been asked before for FSX. The lua is used to counter FSX friction bug. Is this issue also present in P3D? Is it recommended to use it with the 777? I'm using it and feels like it's not very realistic (i.e. full load, starts to roll very slowly even at ground idle, that doesn't feel right). Can someone from the dev team clear this up? Thanks in advance.

Yes, the ground friction issue is present in P3D, and yes, I use DynamicFriction.lua to compensate for it.  But then again, I wrote it.  :-)

 

A GE90-110 engine produces about 4000 lbs of thrust at idle...8000 lbs of thrust is enough to move even a fairly heavy jet.  My r/w experience is in Gulfstreams, and the G-V has high-bypass BMW-Rolls BR710 engines that produce enough thrust at idle that we often had to use reversers during taxi to keep speed under control.  I've been on the ramp and watched 777s taxi off with no audible change in the engine noise, so if they were pushing it up at all, it wasn't much.

Pardon my ignorance - but how do you install this lua script? Is it hard?

It requires the registered version of FSUIPC.  In the FSUIPC documentation folder it you will find a folder titled "Example LUA Plugins".  Copy file DynamicFriction.lua from there to your P3D modules folder

 

In your modules folder, edit fsuipc.ini and add the following two lines at the end (this assumes you are not already using any lua scripts):

 

[Auto]

1=Lua DynamicFriction

I use it in P3D v3.4 and it makes a huge improvement when taxing everything from PMDG to default. You don't need to bump up the throttles unrealistically when making tight turns on taxi for example.

Alright, so it is recommended and realistic to use with the PMDG 777? I don't suppose there are real life 777 pilots on the forum, so a comment from one of the devs would be nice.

I'm not a real life 777 pilot, but I deal with real life professional flight simulators, and LUA Script does a terrific job in this regard.

I found out that with the LUA script there are some slight differences in how long it takes to the 777 to decelerate during landing and to accelerate during takeoff. Since I have the feeling that those times are already a bit too short and with LUA they seem to be a couple of seconds shorter, I ended up with not using the LUA script...

I'm not a real life 777 pilot, but I deal with real life professional flight simulators, and LUA Script does a terrific job in this regard.

I managed to ask an Air Canada 777 F/O today. He says even with heavy loads, all he needs to do is release the brakes and the aircraft would move forward. In fact, we shut down one engine while waiting for a gate. Even with only Engine No.1, it didn't take that much thrust to get moving. So, yes, the lua file is fantastic and (as) realistic (as it gets) on the 777. Looks like that DynamicFrictions.lua is going back in!
