Strange CTDs after Reinstall

Featured Replies

I've been having some problems with FS9. My old install was having some problems with missing default land classes so I did a reinstall hoping that would fix the problems. I uninstalled the old and installed a new version. Now FS9 won't even start. I start the program, spashscreen shows up, screen goes black for a second with the FS pointer on it, then it crashes to the desktop. This new install is completely clean with no addons of any sort. Some things I've determined.-It's not driver related, at least I don't think it is. I'm using Forceware 82.12 beta, but was using the latest officials before. DriverCleaner Pro was used properly upon uninstalling old drivers.-It's not overclocking related, my card is at default clocks.-I've installed FS9.1 and it still doesn't work. Installed the No-CD patch for 9.1 and now I get the standard "Do you want to tell Microsoft about the problem" window before it crashes. I wasn't getting that before so its a start.-It's not DX9 related, other DX9 stuff works.-All other games work.-I've let it rebuild a new FS9.cfg with no success.I can't think of anything that can be causing this. Any ideas?BTW, I've tried deleting and reinstalling FS9 several times now but it still keeps doing it.

When you say you reinstalled FS, di you thoroughly clean the old folders? You don't just unuinstall the sim, you have to manually delete saved flights and previous FS9.cfg. Sounds like you may have done the latter, but did you do the former? If the flight is corrupted for any reason, no amount of reinstalling is going to help.Allcott

Could be corrupted scenery.cfg file. Could be Active Camera which does not work with NO CD exe or could be duplicate AFCADS. I would un-install everything including addons and things like dll files and start fresh.Lee

It's completely clean. I moved all old addons to another folder and installed FS9 in a new folder. I deleated all old flights and the old FS9 application data folder.I don't have Active Camera. There are no AFCADs installed in the new folder.

I've narrowed the problem down significantly. Playing with the FS9 config file, I discovered that turning "Show_Opening_Screen = 0" provides a fix, sort of. I can now get into the sim itself. I can select planes, airports, weather, etc. I can fly. The sim only crashes when I try to access FS9's main menu screen. Any ideas on what might be causing that, or how to fix it?

>Did you update your version of FSUIPC?>Ed Green>KCLTI don't see how that would help. I did a clean install after all so no addon moduels. I tried installing the latest version of FSUIPC but that didn't do anything.

Did you also delte the folder "flight simulator files" listed under My Documents? This contains flights information also and could lead to your problem if left after a reinstall. Hope you get things worked out!Philip Olsonhttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/supporter.jpg

Do you have anything running in the background that you never used to run - new virus scan or firewall?I'd also suggest making sure you delete all old FS folders, including the my documentsflight simulator files folder...You could try editing fs9.cfg and toggling the render to texture setting - maybe there's something with the video card and 32-bit textures...Just some thoughts.

I thought I might update people on my problem as I'm sure a few might find this useful. I put FS9 down for a few months but picked it back up again this week, and I've solved the problem. As you all know, FS9's xml based menu system works with Internet Explorer to read the xml files and fetch stuff from the net. However, FS9's menu system is not compatable with Internet Explorer 7 Beta. This is why the sim was crashing when it tried to load the main menu. There is a quick solution to this that I found recently put up on the Microsoft FS2004 solutions site. In the main FS2004 folder, look for a file named OLEACC.DLL and rename or delete it. This corrects the incompatability with IE7. You guys can read the support file if you like.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555608I hope this helps people having similar problems.

THANK YOU! I, too, started having this problem after reinstalling FS following an extended FS hiatus. This did the trick for me. Thanks again!

Why is it always one stupid thing that causes the problem? The cause is always something you'd never think of in a million years too. Even though it's unlikely, I hope FSX has its own integrated menu system like FS2002 did.
