What about this little thingy?

The simple answer is that yes, a 512MB video card would be better - but I can't say how much better. If you have a 256MB video card right now, and are thinking about giving the Triplehead-2-Go a try, it's probably wise to first see how your current card performs before going out to buy a 512MB unit :)Just out of curiosity I did some digging on the web and came up with these calculations (if someone knows better, PLEASE correct me):Memory requirements for one 1600x1200 frame at 32 bit color depth:1600 x 1200 = 1920000 pixels1920000 x 32 (bit) = 61440000 bits61440000 / 8 (bit) = 7680000 bytes7680000 / 1024 = 7500 kilobytes / 1024 = 7.3 megabytesWith triple-buffering this comes to 21.9 megabytes if frame C is rendered fully before frame B is replaced by frame ASame with 4X FSAA (note that different AA methods obviously require different amounts of memory):1600 x 1200 = 1920000 pixels1920000 x 8 (4x AA means 8 times the pixels) = 15360000 pixels15360000 x 32 (bit) = 491520000 bits491520000 / 8 (bit) = 61440000 bytes61440000 / 1024 = 60000 kilobytes / 1024 = 58.6 megabytesWith triple-buffering this comes to 175.8 megabytes if frame C is rendered fully before frame B is replaced by frame ALet's try that with 3840x1024 and 4X FSAA:3840 x 1024 = 3932160 pixels3932160 x 8 (4x AA) = 31457280 pixels31457280 x 32 (bit) = 1006632960 bits1006632960 / 8 (bit) = 125829120 bytes125829120 / 1024 = 122880 kilobytes / 1024 = 120 megabytesWith triple-buffering this comes to 360 megabytes if frame C is rendered fully before frame B is replaced by frame AIf my math is incorrect then this is all a complete waste of time, but assuming it isn't, the point here is that as resolution goes up the memory requirements for merely SAVING all the pixel information per frame (or a max of three frames in the case of triple-buffering) goes up significantly. You also have to remember that these calculations don't include the amount of memory required for textures, shaders, geometry and whatnot.

Not a math major myself but I get the Idea. I would only use 2x AA unless the new card i'm getting can handle 4x. At such high resolutions less AAis needed to look smooth. Im on the market for a new card anyway since I have a budget card Nvidia 6600 no gt. May wait a few months as FS10 looms on the horizon and who knows what kind of system that will require. Maybebuild a whole new system for that since building computers is another one of my hobbies. But I would like to see how my current system runs with a top end video card. So will upgrade that and see how it runs. If it runs really good I may try the triple head. Now let's see, video card + triple head thingy + 19 inch monitor = Lots of money. Now that's the math I understand. It means I need to save up. Anyway, thanks for the info.

Hi Janne,I can tell you I am using this with a XFX nVidia 7600GT 256 meg at 3840x1024 with 4xAA 8xAF and triple buffering and getting very smooth graphics on a homebuilt Athlon 64 4000 sitting on an A8N SLI Premium with 2 gigs ram. I did drop scenery detail and autogen from max to just one notch below max and turned off scenery shadow (aircraft shadows still on) from my prior ATI x800 running two monitors. I also used the Flight Environment configuration tool to change the clouds to the lo res sets. With ASv6, TrackIR4Pro and FS2004 running Ultimate Terrain, FSGenesis mesh, Texture enhancements (BEV, GE, VOZ, Silver Wings or Golden Wings depending on what and where I'm flying). I've been able to thoroughly enjoy Aeroworx's King Air, Captain Sim's Hercules and 707, any F1 aircraft, any FSD aircraft, any Eaglesoft aircraft, any Feelthere aircraft, any RealAir aircraft, any Dreamfleet aircraft (including ones you haven't seen yet ;) ), Yannick's Falcon, Shupe's aircraft, the list goes I haven't been able to overload it yet.Oh yeah, forgot to add I'm also running MyTraffic2006 sp1 at 100%!

>Which testures are you changing. Please explain in more>detail how you do this. Many would benefit. >>>>For the texture change to Dxt3 or Dxt1 check the Projectai General forums. There are two sticky's on that showing you how to batch convert. If I remember you have to make the lightmaps readonly first cos they get messed up and to do this they had to be decompressed first(NTFS file compression.http://www.projectai.com/discuss/index.php?board=48.0Steven

thedoggg,> Not a math major myself but I get the Idea.I'm not too good in maths either, which is why I was suspicious of my calculations... ;)> I would only use 2x AA unless the new card i'm getting > can handle 4x. It looks plenty good and leaves more room for better performance.Zane,> I can tell you I am using this with a XFX nVidia 7600GT 256> meg at 3840x1024 with 4xAA 8xAF and triple buffering and> getting very smooth graphics on a homebuilt Athlon 64 4000> sitting on an A8N SLI Premium with 2 gigs ram.Well, coming from someone who's using the gadget that's far better advice than my theoretical math ;) What have you locked your framerates at?

Thanks. I see now what they did was back out the zoom to .31 and then displayed that at the 3840x1024. scott s..

I have most of the add ons you mentioned plus some that require me to push buttons on the fmc like a monkey so I'm glad someone is having success with this. Anyway what kind of frame rates are you getting? Are you running detailed airport sceneries with such high traffic? I had to turn mine down to 40 to 50 %. Not so much because of performance but because airplanes would always pass me on finals and ATC tell me to go around at busy arports. How do you keep this from happening with 100% traffic? I have My Traffic 2004.

I capped my frame rate at 22... actually don't spend too much attention to what the frame rates are in use unless I am noticing jerkiness or pauses. I did find the Feelthere Embraer ERJ145 at KLAX at night in thunderstorm weather to be a bit too much, when I toggle the frame rates they were down around 12.As for go arounds I usually am using VoxATC for any of my planned flights so doesn't present an issue.

12 is actually not that bad with thunderstorms. I get similar (or worse and I am running only 2 screens) with Active Sky multiple cloud layers on complex aircraft or the Building Storms theme which just kills my system (unless I use 2D clouds or lower visibility to zilch). Sometimes I will go up in the (God forbid) default planes just to enjoy really complex weather. It is actually quite enjoyable especially in the Learjet which has the nicest virtual cockpit of the default planes especially with Reality XP Jetline 4 guages (these guages have little effect on performance on my system). With complex addons aircraft I have to limit Active Sky cloud layers to 3 or use the Fair Weather theme for flyable frames from the VC. 3 19" screens and 22 for average, that is about what I get on 2. I lock it from 20 to 30 depending on what, where, or which weather I am flying in. Just got back from Tigerdirect, didn't have any good GPU's in stock only the budget ones. Almost had them order me BFG 7900 GT but decided to wait a bit and do more research. The V-card upgrade will be first before I decide on the Matrox 3 head gizmo. I havent tried VoxATC, will search the forums for info on it. Thanks.
