December 26, 20178 yr Hey gents. Been out of commission for several years. Got the OK from the wife to get a new PC. My old one is a Dell XPS8500 with a GTX 660ti and an i7-3770. Here's the new rig I just ordered. Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated: CPU: i7-8700K Motherboard: MSI Z370 Gaming M5 Ballistix Sport LT 32GB DDR4 2666 Corsair Hydro Series H100i v2 CPU Cooler Samsung 960 EVO M.2 250GB (For OS) Corsair RMi Series 750 Watt PSU MSI GTX 1080TI Duke OC Corsair Carbide Clear 400C Case I'm planning to use a 3TB HDD for most of my sim stuff. Eventually I'd like to add another M.2 SSD to put it on, but I kinda topped out the budget for this system as is right now. I've got an existing 32" 1080p monitor that I'll be using with this setup. I've also got a trusty CH yoke, throttle quad, and rudder pedals. Also the saitek radio, MIP, and switch panels. What do ya'll think? Anything left out or suggestions? I see a lot of the conversations are similar to before about the next gen stuff just around the corner, but it's been 5 years since my last update and that time I went cheap and name brand. This time I'm doing custom and current top of the line. Thanks in advance! December 27, 20178 yr Pretty beefy pc. What sim are you using? Id put it along with windows on that SSD. | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
December 27, 20178 yr Author Well I happened to stumble upon another 250gb M.2 SSD I had in a drawer...not sure what or why I did that, but I'll probably use that too. As for the sim, I had been flying Prepar3d 3.x when it first came out, so I'm guessing I'll update to the new version once this is setup. I do from time to time jump back to FS9 and fly some of my older ac that isn't supported anymore like the FFS Saab 340. After doing some number crunching it looks like I went a little weak on the PSU? Probably should have gone a bit bigger if I try to do any overclocking. Oh well, live and learn. Not sure about Crucial RAM. Bit slow perhaps too, given that your board can handle a lot higher. It will go up to 4000 MHz I believe, although a lot of tinkering required perhaps. 3000 - 3200 would have been optimal perhaps.
December 27, 20178 yr Author I hear ya. I used to have good luck with Ballistix RAM. I was contemplating getting something faster as well, but I wanted to stay within my budget for this build. Got it on a good sale, about $60 less than normal, which made it kinda easy to decide. Fair enough. It's going to be a great PC I feel. I'm a Noctua air cooling fan, but I did install a H100i V2 in a rig I built for my daughter recently and it's performing great. I did replace the fans with Noctua fans though. My Maximus x Code has just arrived one day ahead of schedule. Amazon seem to be doing this all the time now. Email says tomorrow and then it arrives unexpectedly. good job I was at home. I will delid the 8700K, not sure how you feel about that. Might not be something you'd contemplate.
January 4, 20188 yr Author Not going to mess with deliding. I'm happy so far with how zippy this thing is. I'm amazed at how much things have changed since my last build. Fancy bios system, crazy fast boot-up. Nice and cool, quiet running machine. I'm very happy! Now to enjoy the ridiculous long download time for my all my products. Sometimes it sucks to live in the boonies. My only bump in the road was a need to do a bios update for the board to see my m.2 SSD. Got a bit nervous at first when it couldn't find it.
