Google cardboard

Recommended Posts

I have been thinking about VR but a bit daunted by the cost. I recently heard about using Google Cardboard and my mobile phone. I am thinking of getting this one https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Google-Cardboard-25mm-lens-with-NFC-Tag-and-Head-Strap-/181916586668?_trksid=p2141725.m3641.l6368. Once I download the Google cardboard app onto my phone, is this all I need or is there other software I need?

Now I realise that it is pretty unsophisticated and is probably very low tech, but I just want to see if it will work and get a taste of basic VR before I invest any serious money.

Thanks for any replies.

John

Can't hurt to try for $10. Personally would wait before purchasing more expensive VR units. The resolution just isn't there yet. I had an Oculus Rift and sold it after a few months. You couldn't read gauges, the scenery looked fuzzy and you could see the resolution mesh. It needs a higher resolution so I am waiting for the 2nd or 3rd generation VR units before I waste my money again.

You need a program to stream the content from PC to phone.

There are TrinusVr, VRidge and iVRy. Are all payware but have trial versions to try them. iVRy works the best.

With iVRy you need also to download and install on PC Steam and SteamVR (free)

The connection between PC and smartphone is made by a usb cable (USB 3.0 port on PC) and by enabling usb tethering on smartphone.

If you have a smartphone with screen about 5 - 6 inch and a resolution at least 1920*1080 it worth to try.

With smaller resolution e,g, 1280*720 don't worth.

You can fly native VR both X-Plane 11 and P3D 4.1 and of course play other games.

There is a topic at forums.x-plane.org about smartphone and native VR with suggestions and guides but I don't know if permitted to post the link.

I have tried the iRVy app and it works with X-plane (and IL2-BoS) but I wasn't able to get it to work with P3D.  It's also *NOT* 6-DOF (only pan/tilt I think) so serves just to whet your appetite for a real HMD!
