February 3, 20188 yr So I try to make this trek each winter. First I leave from either Indiana or Missouri, depending on what sports game I last attended Indiana Hoosier basketball in Bloomington, or St Louis Blues hockey in St. Louis. This year it is from St Louis. We fly first to Denver to pick up some old friends who have been married as long as us. 46 and counting. Then back to Kansas City to pick up another couple I have known since High School. From there back to Indianapolis for yet another couple. Then from there we head first to Ft Myers, Florida. Then from there to Grand Cayman in the Caribbean. I chose the PA46T Turbo Prop Malibu for the legs to Denver, Kansas City, and Indianapolis, for the blend of speed and economy vs flying one of my twins. The capacity of 6 persons works well for that, and allows for some baggage. Waiting for departure at Spirit of St Louis airport (KSUS) on a cold winter's day. High over Kansas City heading west, the meandering Missouri and Kansas rivers below. Look closely inside the largest crook in the Missouri river below, where the Kansas river meets it, and you can make out the two runways of KMKC, Kansas City Downtown Airport. That is the destination for the return flight back from Denver tomorrow. Just a bit into Kansas, you can see the snow from the recent storm fading in the background. Guess Kansas didn't get as much. Out now over the flat plains of Kansas. Getting a bit concerned at this time that we may need to make a refueling stop. We found ourselves fighting a terrible headwind. As usual, any change in cruise altitude would come with an offsetting penalty. Finally! Descending past downtown Denver. 25 minutes of fuel left. Cut it close on this one, and decent fuel stops in western Kansas and eastern Colorado are few and far between! Whew! That was close! Turning final into Denver Rocky Mountain Airport (KBJC), the namesake Rocky Mountains in the distance! Safely on the ground at Rocky Mountain. Taxiing straight to fuel! Then off to dinner with friends Sharon and Richard for some Rocky Mountain oysters! Tomorrow back to Kansas City! Wish more included a "why I was flying there", and "what I saw along the way". Some added interest level comments and perhaps local knowledge. I am also trying to encourage some additional $100 Hamburger posts! Screenshots, accompanied by actual photographs, and something about the airport's hamburger cafe! I will do some more of those after this Caribbean trip, which will continue in some additional posts.
