ATL new runway

Featured Replies

Next week, KATL will open a brand new billion dollar 9000 ft runway. I wonder if anybody is working on a new afcad for the default scenery that includes this new runway and taxiways? This runway will not initially have ILS and CATII capability. Thats scheduled for Q1 2007. Sooo...a side slip to this runway is likely.Just wondering if anybody is working on this because its a huge event in US air traffic handling because ATL is the busiest airport in the US and I think globally nowadays. Already in the library:katl_ils_v1.1.zip"Let me help you out. You're cleared to taxi any way you can to any runway you see."

Thanks. I dont think thats an accurate AFCAD though. I am looking to find a new approach plate to compare it to.

Check out www.atcmonitor.com. Lots of details about it there, plus a briefing on all the approach changes and new plates.

Thanks. I dont think thats an accurate AFCAD though. I am looking to find a new approach plate to compare it to.The author is a commercial pilot who's base is KATL. He created the airport based on construction documentation, visual inspection and airport documentation. He is also the person who created the first approaches to add functional ILS and other approaches to airports with new runways, KMIA, KMCO, KMSP.Also besides the new runway - runway 9L/27R has been extended to 13,000 ft.Jim has included approach files to make Rwy 10/28 work as a precision runway in FS.As he notes in the readme - this is a work in progress - there will be updates. Also, the airport will not work right is the supporting files are not placed in the correct folders as described in the readme. While no AFCAD is completely accurate the day after it is published due to real world changes, I'll go with Jim's version any time.Jim does make one deviation from reality - he makes the airport work in FS for AI traffic. There are a lot of "realistic" and "accurate" AFCAD files which simply do not work with AI traffic. Jim's are not among them.Lastly, the new runway will NOT increase the landing capacity for AI traffic. FS9 doesn't work that way. For any traffic, AI or user, to be assigned to any runway but one of the outside two - the flight must originate in a very narrow area with the departure airport almost directly lined up with the inner runway. Doesn't happen often. However, your aircraft does have the option of requesting a different approach - always ask for a different approach, not a different runway.

One other thing - based upon a couple responses in the FSX thread - the new runway probably will not be in FSX - it appears the navigation / airport data was frozen about April 2005.

Jim's file is pretty good, but the massive number of jetways he's added, put together with the traffic levels ATL, gives me a quite noticable performance hit.

BrianI have received from Jeppesen on 05/09/06 a current taxiway structure diaghram and some preliminary Approach charts with the new Transistions for runway 10/28. These are good up to 06/08/06 and I am working now on my KATL update. One of the areas on my list is to use the FS9 KATL default Jetways instead of the ones that are now present. When I change out the Jetways to a more friendly type there will be a increase in FPS. In the mean time you can decrease the scenery slider and some Jetways will disappear.

Im not being critical. I fly into and out of ATL every week as a passenger and resident and while the runway and taxiways look mostly right, there appears to be a cargo area thats not there in real life.Understanding its a work in progress and was produced months ago, Im perfectly happy to wait for an update in due course.Eric

Jim,I am sure it is very accurate, you aren't one to "guess" your way through something like this, for sure. I suppose my comments were criticism of a sort, but certainly not over accuracy.I run at Very Dense, as anything below this, removes a bit too many objects for my tastes, most notably, the jetways at all other default airports.I'll stand by for an update, and either way, thank you for your efforts, in ATL and elsewhere. Really enjoying your MSP.Take care.
