Caribbean Trek - Island Hopping

Featured Replies

Today we do an afternoon day trip to Cayman Brac, furthest island east in the Cayman’s.

Our wives are doing some souvenir shopping already and heading to the beach.  The guys and I rented a C337H Skymaster for a hop to Cayman Brac for a beer and Shushi at a great little place I found two years ago.  Barracuda’s Bar and Grill.

The island hopper C208 I leased should arrive from Florida this afternoon to be swapped out for the Plane-Jane blue C208 taxi that I had to use to bring us down here.  Not paying anything for Plane Jane for today, so renting the Skymaster actually saves us a few bucks.  Turns out also the Skymaster has the upgraded RXP Garmin GNS 530 v2.  That’s what the island hopper 208 has, so today will be like a bit of a check ride in that respect.

Taxiing for takeoff at MWCR, Roberts International, Georgetown, Grand Cayman.

Off from Rwy 08 and turning to a heading of 110° to get into position to run parallel to the Grand Cayman coast until we pass the east end of the island.

Oh no! Not this again!  Into the cloud layer at 3,000 so have to drop back to 2,500 or even 2,000 to protect the view below.  This is like what happened as we left Ft Myers, Florida, the other day.

Not what we were looking for, but still surreal beauty!

The east end of Grand Cayman fading behind, we head out over open water.  Will be like this for close to an hour as I fly low and slow for the view and for economy.  Though it looks like it’s clearing here, I can see more clouds and perhaps weather in the distance ahead.

Based on what lies immediately ahead this may be the last glimpse of the sun that we see for a while.

Can’t fool a former meteorologist (Air Force days).  Here we head into an afternoon tropical shower.  Perhaps you can see that I am showing the guys the old form of navigation.  I have the RXP GNS 530 in VLOC mode and have both NAV1 and NAV2 set to the VOR at Grand Cayman.  That way I can show them the HSI with crosshairs, and the Omni with its sweep hand.  I also have the ADF set to the NDB  named CDC at Cayman Brac.

View from the rear right passenger seat.  Can see rain off to the southeast.

Looks like it’s time to get a bit wet!  Owner said the windshield is treated regularly with Rain-X, a product I am familiar with from my days in the motorcycle industry.  That should help!

Well what do you know! Got through that one with only a few drops of rain and no thunder!  Just got approach clearance to MWBC, Kirkconnell Intl, on Cayman Brac.  Was told to expect a hold at the IAF, TALES int.

Entering the hold at TALES int.  Traffic into Cayman Brac visible ahead.

Now on final to Rwy 09.  Obvious shower off to the north.  Actually that looks like a squall and it appears to be moving rapidly!  But is it moving to the south? Or off to the east?  Let’s just get down!

Short final now.  VASI looks good!  The sudden squall disappeared as quickly as it formed!

Getting some friendly help parking at MWCB.  This airport scenery is part of the Cayman Islands set sold by Latin VFR,

Used a courtesy car to get to Barracuda’s Bar and Grill on Cayman Brac.  These out of the way places often serve the best food!  I will be trying out Caribbean fish tacos throughout our stays here in the islands, but today it is all about sushi and Caribbean beer with a citrus wedge!

Uhhh! The locals detest that California mention....  It's all fresh native fish here.  That's the reason for the small variety.  Even the veggies in the "California" rolls are local grown! LOL!  (the rice comes from South Carolina)
