You mean in AppData\Roaming\...\Controls?

AFAIK one contains presets for all kinds of controller hardware and the other the actual assignments. When you plug in one of the known controllers, the preset is copied from one file to the other. That way the initial axis and button assignments make some kind of sense right from the start.

Yes and I think it stores other button defaults also.  I think this happens when you unplug your controller during a flight, standard.xml gets overwritten so it takes another 1hr to reset all the buttons.  I always backup standard.xml now

I did tick my standard.xml file properties read-only attribute box so it does not get overwritten.

That's the main reason I switched to FSUIPC for all my controllers. Once set up I can forget about standard.xml.
