August 16, 20187 yr Good pics, classic colors! Saw the white cliffs of Dover last year, taking the ferry to and from Calais France. They were a sight as they receded into the mist of the channel, as we went towards Calais. The Dover ferry was the biggest ship I have ever been on, and they told us the channel is the busiest waterway in the world. John

That is true, it is the world's busiest shipping lane, but largely because it is so very narrow and so lots of ships have to pass through a very narrow navigable slot. It has some notoriously difficult to navigate currents too, making even a simple crossing from Dover to Calais not quite as simple as one might imagine. This is one of the reasons why it is fairly unlikely that Germany would have managed to pull off an invasion of the UK mainland even if the RAF had lost the Battle of Britain, it's far more likely the UK would have been starved into submission by the U-Boats in the Atlantic affecting its supplies. It's remarkably shallow too, less than 150 feet deep between Dover and Calais at its deepest point. It's considerably less deep closer in to land, where numerous sand bars are located, as evidenced by the fact that several ships, sunk in the channel, did not completely submerge. This is why it was rare (and very risky) for U-Boats to operate in the English Channel in WW1 and WW2. They could barely manage to completely submerge in many locations in the Channel without risking grounding themselves, so would be easily detected as a result of those operational constraints. Much of the North Sea is similarly shallow because it all sits on Europe's continental shelf which is why quite a few U-Boats were sunk there too.
