P3Dv4 Mega problems with freeware scenery

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I am having huge problems with freeware Australian scenery.  Ordinarily, I would not use anything other than payware, however, I have all of ORBX Australian scenery and tghere is absolutely nothing else in the payware scenery for:-

YPAD, YBWW, YPPH YBTL nor YPDN.

So I am resorting to AVSIM and Flightsim libraries. I have loaded all of these sceneries both manually through the Scenery Library/add scenery/location etc, and, using Lorbi_si Addon Manager. Both methods work and apart from YBTL I have flown out of and into, each one. All perfectly normal.  Next day I attempt to get into P3Dv4 and it is locked up at the opening logo.  Lorbi to the rescue ... each and every freeware Aussie airport is red. I have now been trying to permanently install these sceneries (and keep my rapidly diminishing hair) for the last 10-11 days and nothing is working.

I am checking each scenery after downloading and unzipping to ensure that I have a folder (ie YPPH) which contains only scenery and texture sub folders.

I am a newbie to P3Dv4 and despite using only one monitor, I am actually learning to love it after many (too many) years with FS2004 and 6 monitors. I will freely admit, that, my newness and obvious ignorance with P3Dv4 procedures, that it is most probably, me, who is creating the problem. I am however, now out of ideas and genuinely need some help.

Can anybody who is successfully using these sceneries/airports give me some pointers and or some COMPATABLE sceneries which do work. I stress the compatable because I am very aware that these we designed for FSX and P3Dv1,2, and 3.

I would also like to mention that after each installation I am running FTX3Settings and auto configuring the add ons. Maybe this is the problem, I do not know,  I would also like to point out the using this ORBX FTX auto config is disabling ORBX YMML and YMUI which I think is rather strange.

One last question

Fly Tampa YSSY is included in P3Dv4 but it is not at all good and looks very ordinary to say the least (for me).  I note that it is not included in the Scenery Library and I am wondering if I have to add it to the library.

Any to sum it all up help(in capitals) is what I really need and I hope someone can help me.

Thanks for sympathic ears

Regards

Tony

Hello Tony,

red only means that they were deactivated (by something you or some other tool did), nothing was wrong with them. That the sim wouldn't start is usually caused by a broken path or empty scenery folder, which would be shown in violet in P4AO. This is a new behavior in P3D 4.3, you must make sure that if you add a scenery path there really is a scenery in that location.

I suggest that you contact me via email, the address is on the last page of the P4AO user manual.

Best regards

There is a payware YPAD by AUSCENE available on Simmarket.

Bruce,

Thanks matey, was blissfully unaware of that and I have had a quick look.  Does not look too bad and I will be buying it in a week or so. See below.

Oliver,

Deactivation (to me) means it aint not gunna bloody work.  So I do not really know what you meant by that.

I have re-checked all my scenery paths and all look good to me. I have deleted anything that is not a .BGL file in the scenery sub-folders and anything not a texture in the texture sub-folders.

I have re installed them all (one at a time) and getting out of and then back into P3D after each installation.  P3d load up is normal but, this is the procedure I have been following for the last three scenery installs.

I still have some queries so I will definitely be emailing you.  However (and bruce please note too),  I am off to a little place called Red Island on the south east coast of East Java for a re-union with one of my younger brothers and his spouse who have travelledc from the q  and will be away from my computer for about a week

Guys,

I have no idea what happened there and I apologise.

To continue..,. who have travelled from the Gold Coast (YBCG) in Queensland and I will be away from my computer for about a week, and will contact you when I return.

Bruce, I asked you to note because I am wondering if you actually have this scenery and whether it was any good.  I will buy it because it has to be better that default scenery, but, I am wondering.

Thanks again for your help.

Hello Tony,

the difference between "deactivation" and "not going to work" is, that you can turn activation on and off at will yourself. "Not going to work" is another matter entirely.

Deactivating a scenery (and subsequently showing up in red in P4AO) can be done in a number of ways:

  • On the P34D scenery library dialog with the checkboxes
  • If it is based on an addon.xml, on the Options->Add-ons dialog in P3D, again with the checkboxes
  • In P4AO
    • by doubleclicking the sceneries
    • If they are based on add-on.xml, by doubleclicking the package that they are in on the package view
    • By using the group logic in P4AO

All this can be done by you or another program, but the point is, that you can reverse it just as easily.

This is not the case for actually broken scenery, that would show up in violet in P4AO.

I suggested the email, because if you create a backup of your config with P4AO and send it to me, then I can tell you why your sceneries have been disabled.

Word of advice, not knowing if it even applies to you: don't use several scenery management apps at the same time. Settle for one and stick with it.

Best regards

Yes I have this scenery and I am quite satisfied with it.  Haven't been to the City of Churches for some time so can't vouch for just how close it matches reality but I am sure it is much more up to date than, for example, Orbx's YSCB which depicts Canberra Airport as it was in 2009 well before the current over the top terminal (if we build it they will come) was completed.

Oliver,

I had absolutely no idea that you spoke and wrote in upper case braille LOL I will have to take some time to digest all of that and again, I still have some queries so I will definitely be emailing you soon.

Bruce,

I am, like you a long time far from both YCSB and YPAD ... in fact last time in Adelaide was in 1968 (January through to April) and I remember that clearly simpoly because that was when I joined the RAAF and underwent "Rookies" there in Edinburgh. Similarly, I have driven through Canberra three times (only stopped for petrol) and on each occasion managed to avoid squabbling politicians LOL and I think the last time was probably 2006 anyway. As I said though, I will buy simply because of the better scenery than default and the fairly similar AVSIM/Flightsim downloads. DFespite having travelled through all olf the major Australian Airports, I am not current with any (other than Perth and Cairns)  so up-to-dated(ness) is not really relevant to me. I just want reasonably good scenery.

Cheers guys ... see you in a week

Tony

Oliver.

Great news,

Over the course of two days I have no pink, red, yellow, violet or anything but green after making all my entries with the xml method.

I am a happy vegemite now so I thank you heartily again
