I always end up slightly left or right of the runway when landing

Featured Replies

When I am on approach all seems fine, and i seem perfectly aligned with the runway centerline, although as i get closer I end up either left or right, is it wind correction or am I doing something wrong? I am flying the PMDG 737

My guess would be the wind direction factor.  Are you hand flying this aircraft or letting the whizzbang computer on board do the flying?  PMDG questions are better served in their forum.

Just going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱
Trying to keep peace and harmony and the will of Landru on the site seems to be a full time job!

Unfortunately this is in some part due to the limitations of a flight simulator displaying on a computer monitor. On the real thing you have peripheral vision helping you out with centering up and flaring and can crane your neck and move your head around easily to fine tune what you see, right up to the last second before the wheels hit if you so desire, not so with a single PC monitor.

So don't be too disappointed if you can't nail that centreline perfectly, you don't wanna be rolling over them lights anyway, it's bumpy lol. As long as you are on the runway with your main wheels well clear of the edges, it's a good landing and probably as good as most other pilots could do with the same equipment and visual cues.

Agree with the previous 2 replies. Among other things, Microsoft has rather overdone the weathervane effect from prevailing wind, when applied to jet aircraft, and this produces unrealistic responses to directional control in the last stages of an approach. MS seemed to think a medium sized jet should react like a small Cessna. In the real world the important thing is to set up a stable approach down the centreline, and apply corrections to maintain. But in the simulator, as you have found, a stable approach does not assure you of touching down on the centreline, whatever corrections you may apply. But lots of practice will help.
