Runway Heading Incorrect

Featured Replies

Don't know if this is where this question belongs, but I'll start here.  I have a recent FSX-SE installation.  I'm sensing that several magnetic headings are off. I have applied Hervé Sors latest magnetic corrections to my FSX-SE installation.

For instance, when I line up for takeoff at KMWH on runway 32R, my heading seems to be about 327° rather than 324° which is shown on the current approach chart.  Evaluating KMWH with ADE 1.76 indicates that the runway heading is 342.1527°.  Magnetic declination is 15.65° E which gives a magnetic runway heading of 326,5°.  The approach chart says 324°.  Apparently the runway heading of the stock airport is incorrect but I don't know why, or maybe I don't understand where the problem is.  I'd appreciate more insight into this apparent discrepancy and suggestions for possible fixes.

Thanks in advance,

Jim Driskell

I checked both skyvector and airnav and 342 True is the correct runway heading, so FSX is accurate in terms of true heading. The current airport diagram shows a magnetic heading of 326.7. I'm guessing the approach chart (and I'm assuming you mean ILS 32R) is 324 because approach charts are not updated for magnetic variation very frequently.

You are probably right that the charts haven't been updated for the magnetic heading progression.  Both the FAA and Jeppesen Approach IFR plates for RW32R show 324° so that's how we'll fly it.  What's a few degrees between friends?

Thanks,

Jim,

Thanks for the reference.  I'm going to go with what is published by the FAA and Jeppesen for ILS approach headings.  They seem to work.  But I'm always concerned by variations from the norm which is the case with RW 32R at KMWH, which is my favorite practice airfield (13,000 ft of runway).  it's the old Larson AFB which was a SAC Base in the 1950s.  The BUFFs need tons of runway to get airborne and sometimes I need that much to land! 🐵
