January 15, 20197 yr To avoid unstable approaches and runway diving I changed my human logic from : 1) I am going to land this plane unless I can't see the runway lights at MDA to 2) I am going to GO AROUND unless I can see the runway clearly by MDA. Needed the GA practice anyway but my flying is so much smoother now at all approach phases. Russell Gough SE London

Even an approach in CAVU conditions one should have eyes open for obstacles on the runway. However, when IMC you don't need to see the runway clearly to legally proceed; rather, the runway environment is the key. This can be taken to mean the approach lights. I've landed quite legally not being able to see the runway threshold at MDA/DA but I had the lights and the rabbit (sequential strobes) so I could continue and of course the threshold comes into view before you get there.
