Problems with making an overcast cloud layer

Even with 'stratus' clouds picked, it doesn't create an overcast layer... it was this way in fs9, and they haven't fixed it... sorry for the bad news. Another thing, the 'thunderstorms' still look like fs9.

To get a realistic overcast, try also adding a low visibility level at the same altitude range of the overcast clouds.

>I'd suggest selecting Stratus clouds.I tried Stratus Clouds, but that seams to have made the problem worse. Increasing the layer thinkness also was no help.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/154028.jpgI also tried Cirrus Clouds, but they had a weird effect of disappearing altogether as a flew into the layer and then reappearing as a cleared the top of the layer. The Cirrus clouds did seam to cover the sky better, but was not opaque like an overcast layer of clouds should be.Hopefully Microsoft can address this problem before final release.

This is the only work-around for it. There's no true overcast in this game -- yes I said game.

In the display settings- Weather tab, what is your cloud coverage set at?

Cloud coverage is set at - OVERCAST (8/8)

I matched your display settings (Cloud Coverage Density: Maximum)It seamed to help a little, but overcast layer still isn't solid.

> There's no true overcast in this game -- yes I said game.Oooooo!

I was experiencing the same thing as the original poster....until I turned the cloud coverage density slider to max. All I did was add a cumulus cloud layer from 2000 ft to 15000 ft. I did not adjust the visibility as was suggested above. This is the result. http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/154038.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/154039.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/154040.jpgIt would seem that overcast is alive and well in FSX, as long as you turn the cloud density slider up.

Have you tried the 'gray and rainy' weather theme? It produces ( for me)a very nice overcast but I'll agree with you that I can't seem to replicateit using the custom weather. EDIT: It looks like turning up the cloud density is probably the answer (considering those pics)

There's always a sunset happening somewhere in the world that somebody is enjoying.

FINALLY! A GOTCHA! :(score is 1-1

Despite I'm not completely satisfied with the demo ;-) I found out how to make a really convincing overcast layer:Made this in the custom weather - advanced settings dialog:Clouds: 1st layer 1000-2500 ft stratus 8/8 2nd layer 2500-3500 ft cumulus 6/8 (just to make it look better) 3rd layer 10000-16000 ft cumulus (the same)Vis: 1st layer 1-1500 ft 4 mi 2nd layer 1501-2000 ft 1/16 mi (just densest fog) 3rd layer 2001-1000 ft 30 mian the result: see attachments. This was one of the most wished features. Now let's hope that the internal weather engine will interpret the METARs like that and make stratus clouds with integrated fog layer... Otherwise there will be Active Sky or such. And, as you can see (13 frames/sec), my old box (Athlox 1800+, 1 Gig RAM, Radeon 9600 with 128 MB) can do it comparably well.Just happy!!!
