August 14, 200619 yr My setup is as follows:Athlon 2600+ CPUGigabyte FX5900 XT + 128 mbNVidia 91.31 WHQL drivers2 Gbyte RAMGraphics set to use Shader2.0 using RivaTuner. With the water setting at anything from Low x2 - High x2, I can see water reflections fine a see level - looks nice and the movement is realistic.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/154082.jpgBut at this setting when flying the water looks horrible - more like crushed ice !http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/154083.jpgIf I turn down the water setting to High x1, it quite nice but very like FS9, but there are no reflections and sea level looks yuk!http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/154084.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/154085.jpgIs this really what others are seeing. I know I have read that FX series cards are maybe not the best but given that the reflections look good at sea level - why the crushed ice look once airbourne ?Any thoughts?Regards,Stuart
August 14, 200619 yr My water when cranked up is not quite as intense. That looks like a decent storm :)Maybe bump mapping is a bit too strong there.Remember that this is a demo of a beta- and not even the same code as the current betas. It's older.
August 14, 200619 yr I used to get that same texture problem, exactly the same as in your second picture. It was driving me insane as evberybody else has great looking water effects.(I also have an FX5900 GC) But I came out of full screen mode and into windows, restarted FSX and now the problem seems to have gone. You could try that to see if it helps. It is deffinatelty a problem of some kind (maybe with FX series cards I'm not sure) and your right it does look a bit liked crushed ice!One thing is for certain though, FSX has brought my system to its knees. I do have a pretty old system for todays standards though: AMD 2800+ Barton, FX5900, 1Gb Ram, Nvidia Nforce2 Chipset. As Roy Scheider in Jaws says "You're gonna need a bigger boat!" Rhydian
August 14, 200619 yr I am already in Windows mode and not full-screen.However, I had a look at the OceanHeight.bmp in the texture folder and found that this was what was creating the extream 'crushed ice' effect. Having substituted it for one from FS9, the effect on the water is dramatic.I'll upload a couple of pics in a while. Just going to try an alternative bmp.Regards,Stuart
August 14, 200619 yr It's back for me again. It seems to be when I change to dusk, night or dawn textures. If I close FSX and then restart it usualy goes away. But as soon as i change time setting it just reappears again. It's very annoying I'll try and change the oceanheight.bmp like you suggested. hopefully that will fix itRegardsRhydian
August 14, 200619 yr I believe this may be related to our FX5900 video cards. I posted a topic on something similar to this in the issues thread.(Wait for the page to fully load and it will eventually take you to my topic)http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...522&page=#14889Looks like the same thing is happening to you. In your first pic look between the shoreline and the top of the plane. You can see the hard transition from reflective water to the "crushed ice water". Its a radius around your plane. Inside the radius things look good outside of the radius you loose the nice effects.-Thad
August 14, 200619 yr It is likely an issue with the FX5??? series. I don't know if we'll be able to do anything about it, unfortunately.
August 14, 200619 yr I have a 7800GT, and while I don't get as MUCH crushed ice effect, I still get a little bit. Let's hope this gets tweaked a little more. And if not, I'm sure someone will come up with better water textures for FSX. As I said in the other thread, I think "Perfect Water" for FS2004 is pretty good.Rhett Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB

August 14, 200619 yr Thanks for the confirmation Mike. While it's unfortunate for those who are unable to upgrade their hardware, it won't be a factor for me much longer. I'm already in the planning stages for a new machine.
August 14, 200619 yr Author Relating to the water...Check out this post:The Moon appears to trigger what should be the sun's diffuse/specular reflection!!! http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...id=15401&page=2 "We shall not cease from exploration... and the end of all our exploring... will be to arrive where we started... and know the place for the first time." - T.
