I agree - the new livery is terrific.  I wasn't able to appreciate it when I saw it in the initial drawings, but once I saw it on the real aircraft, I was sold.  The old (!) red/white/blue stripe had gotten a bit tired - the result of overexposure, I guess.  Even a good look can hang around too long.

Re: bare metal as an alternative - apparently they decided it wasn't possible because it couldn't be applied to composite aircraft like the 787, and they wanted the look to be consistent across the fleet.  They broke that pattern once - when the A300s were first delivered, they had a protective coating over the aluminum, so American decided to paint them gray.  After a few years they removed the primer and went with bare metal on the A300s, too.
