July 16, 20196 yr I'm trying to find a dataref or a setting that allows me to control the number of cloud puffs drawn on a ring by ring basis. I found a dataref that decreases the number of cloud puffs but the first thing it does is to do away with clouds farthest from you. I want to adjust number of puffs on each ring so I can try different cloud styles. | Dave | I've been around for most of my life. July 16, 20196 yr See some of the datarefs listed here, especially the ones for overdraw, plot and count. https://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/forums/topic/150598-xp11-default-clouds-look-amazing/&do=findComment&comment=1430099 Edited July 16, 20196 yr by Bjoern 7950X3D + 7900 XT + 64 GB + Linux | 4800H + RTX2060 + 32 GB + Linux My add-ons from my FS9/FSX days
July 16, 20196 yr Author Hi. Thanks for the link. It may be count ratio that Im looking for. I had tried overdraw control but thats the one that gets rid of far clouds. I was messing with some other datarefs and my sim became unstable so I quit. but Im ready to try again. Ill look at those tomorrow. | Dave | I've been around for most of my life. July 16, 20196 yr Yes it should be the count ratio if I remember correctly. I advise you disable the two inner rings (setting "first_res_3d" dataref to 2) because clouds look better and have better performance without them. "Society has become so fake that the truth actually bothers people".
July 17, 20196 yr Author count ratio doesnt seem to do anything on my system. first res 3D=2 has a nice effect especially when combined with a lower overdraw control (like .2 or .4). I think they must be changing things because very few of those datarefs seem to do anything...unless Im just crazy...which i am but thats another issue 🙂 I looked at some of the shader files hoping to find some variables or defines but I havent seen anything yet.I'd hate to think they hard coded it but they might have. thanks for the help guys. | Dave | I've been around for most of my life. July 18, 20196 yr Some datarefs only take effect after a redraw of clouds. Count ratio is possibly one of them. You can force clouds redraw by changing any setting in the weather screen (even if you set it back before clicking on "Apply", clouds will be redrawn anyway). July 18, 20196 yr Author Thanks Murmur, that was it. The cell size datarefs are probably the same. I think for now Im going to continue my soft cloud approach. XP seems to like/need soft clouds. | Dave | I've been around for most of my life. There's always a sunset happening somewhere in the world that somebody is enjoying.
July 19, 20196 yr If you come up with something good, don't forget to share the values for all datarefs. From the amount of environment altering LUA scipts in the download database at XP.org, there's ample interest in this stuff. 7950X3D + 7900 XT + 64 GB + Linux | 4800H + RTX2060 + 32 GB + Linux My add-ons from my FS9/FSX days
July 20, 20196 yr After years of fiddling with datarefs trying to improve default clouds, I suggest you abandon the idea and just go with X-Vision's Impressive Lua Solution. In my opinion, it's really the best option for now, and I tried them all. - Currently giving X-Plane 12.10 a spin on Shadow PC. 10 years with X-Plane now, since 10.20
