I think I'm partly concerned that while the 9900K might be ideal for P3D today, a Ryzen 7 3700X platform might be a better choice for a truely modern sim like the upcoming FS2020.  P3D's hunger for main core performance is largely due to it's old architecture.  Yes Lockheed has done a wonderful job improving it and yes it uses multiple cores today, but I wonder how a modern sim designed for multi cores from the start will differ, and will such a sim prefer something other than high main core performance?

I think, this close to FS2020 going into beta, I may just wait a tad longer so I can make a more educated choice new PC for the long term.

Waiting is good, But hurts me a lot 😄 haha, I'm just waiting to get a 3950X and forget about anything for some years... 😄 at this age of mine, I have learnt that digging more and more hurts more and more 😄 so choose one and be happy with it. ( gonna go from i7 3610QM to 3950X )

So, I've had a play around with my new 3700X.

With just Precision Boost Overdrive (the AMD automatic overclock function) enabled, using the updated Ryzen Master utility, a Noctua NH-D15 air cooler and the same cr*ppy B350 mobo, I'm getting an average of 4.3 GHz across all cores (a couple at 4.275, and one or two at 4.325, maybe pushing to 4.35 on occassion).

Testing using the PMDG 737NGX, AIG traffic limited to 150 aircraft, Rex SF textures at 512 resolution, ActiveSky, and using the FFTF Dynamic utility - all of the features used when I was using the 1700X.

Have you tried overclocking the Infinity Fabric speed? Several review sites indicate that may be the secret to increasing performance.

Not yet, I'm already getting near as d*mn it continuous 4.3GHz on 1 or 2 cores using the utility.

Mucking around for ages with IF values, manual overclocking using Ryzen Master and testing various RAM timings and lowering voltages (to lower heat output) are chores that I can't face this month.

You're right that it'll likely be worth it when I have the patience again. However, after a weekend and a week of evenings just getting the new CPU stable plus testing the results in P3D, I just want to get back simming properly for a bit.

For anyone on a Zen 2 chip (and for me to find it again), this video is a brilliant look at what should be adjusted to improve performance:
