Help Needed to Re-install NVIDIA Control Panel

Featured Replies

I need help to re-install the NVIDIA control panel. I mistakenly removed the control panel on the latest NVIDIA RTX 2080 update (431-60) What threw me was the control panel now had a icon in the apps section of window 10 which I never had before so that is why when I was going for the clean update, the control panel got hosed.

After reloading the new driver (above) I got a message that the program could not find the control panel and gave me a link to the Microsoft Store. That in itself created a whole can of worms in that I now needed to set up an account with Microsoft to download a FREE NVIDIA control panel from them. After going through the process of supposedly ordering/downloading this FREE item, I was given an order number but no way to check on how/where it will be sent to me. I just called at 0830 Eastern time and they said they were closed so no help there. Last night I tried to talk to Microsoft tech assistance which was one of the three options when you call in for order assistance. The Indian accent person on the line knew less about this than I do and supposedly they are to call me back this AM.

I understand that Window 10 has in the past had some problems with the control panel not displaying but could be resolved by just updating the drivers. This did not help me nor rolling the driver back to a previous version. I  even tried copying the control panel file from my other computer which has the GTX 980 card in it and that did not work. Most likely there is more to installing the control panel other than putting it's file folder inside the main NVIDIA folder.

I hope someone out there has the answer I need on how to get and install the NVIDIA control panel back into my computer.  I even went as far as to allow the extra NVIDIA Experience stuff to be installed figuring it might be a path to a more complete recovery. Sorry to say it did not work. I normally only install video drivers only as I do not need all that extra junk taking up space and computer ops.

If you have a backup of your boot drive that pre-dates the problem, restoring that would be a quick fix.

If your CPU/motherboard has an integrated GPU (e.g. a HDMI and/or DP port on the motherboard's back I/O panel), you could plug your monitor in there, then in Control Panel -> Device Manager right-click on the nVidia GPU and select uninstall this device, and then also check the remove drivers for this device option.  Then reboot into safe mode, run DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller, a free utility available at Guru3D.com) and remove any remnants of the nVidia drivers, then reboot normally and do a clean install of the nVidia drivers.

No guarantee this will work...I've had things go wonky with the NCP before, for example where the SLI options would just disappear, and no amount of uninstalling/reinstalling devices and drivers would fix it.  I had to resort to restoring a recent backup, which was a real rescue.

If you don't have a backup and the device+driver uninstall/reinstall doesn't work, you're likely looking at a rebuild from a fresh Win 10 installation, followed by a trip to the store to buy yourself a backup drive so you'll never find yourself in that position again.

No on the backup files. Only backed up personal docs and pictures. Windows wanted too much space to copy the other files.

We use to be able to roll back to earlier version/days but did not seem to find that when I looked in the restore area. Only using Win 10 home vs pro so maybe not the same goodies available.  My computer shop that built the machine only sent a DVD version of Win 10 and I have no optical reader in this box..

Will windows let me just update/replace files that are found missing from this OS? I did not know that NVIDIA control panels were part of Win 10. Thought it was part of the NVIDIA driver update package..

Is there any way that the NVIDIA folder/files on my old machine (GTX 980 card) could be loaded into the RTX 2080 folder in the new box.  At least to get the control panel back. So far just bringing the control panel folder with it's files over did not work/was recognized.

Special update.

I got my NVIDIA Control Panel back and re-installed. After trying numerous times to download the FREE program from the Microsoft Store, and getting messages that I all ready owned it, I contacted the purchasing section which is option 2 out of three and within 5 minutes they had me up and running. A customer service rep named Samantha from the Caribbean had me go to the MS store home page and click on the three dots in upper right screen. Then a couple of more clicks and the software was re-loaded and now I have regained control over my video drivers.

For some reason the email that was suppose to give me all these instruction never came in after the download and since I never used the store before I did not know the how to get your software.

Glad I did not allow the Indian accent MS  tech support guy access to my computer as he knew less than I did on this problem.,

PS:

Just had Frontier Communications upgrade my FIOS from 50/50 Mb to their new 500/500 Mb. Downloads are now super fast. The NVIDIA drivers took 7 seconds instead of the normal 1-2 minutes

  • 1 month later...

You have to sign in to microsoft, make an account if you do not have one. Then place the download in your in box and then it will install.

Supposedly this is for people that are using an OEM version of win 10.
